History of the mortgage edit

This article reads more like an explanation from a sales advisor. Whilst factual it implies that morgages just appeared from nowhere.

Surley there should be some context. For example the history and origins of taking out a mortgage to buy property and any link to its origins in the contracts used for a 25 year period of indentured slavery (which would usually include a house and small amount of land in the uk). 2.123.251.2 (talk) 05:51, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Citations edit

There are no citations in the history of the mortgage in america. Claims are made with citation (purchase of land is a new idea, etc.). 68.134.53.103 (talk) 14:14, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

History in the United States edit

The entire section for history in the United States seems to be completely off topic. Recommend deleting current content and moving discussion of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and related discussions on housing market and loan crises to this section. 2601:204:EA80:5470:B4DB:8820:EA2A:9D5 (talk) 15:56, 15 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

The content of the section was deleted, and somebody left "TBD[1]" in its place. That source was originally cited for the content that was deleted. I deleted the section entirely for now. Regarding your suggestion, I don't know if there's enough info currently in the United States section to necessitate splitting some of it into a history subsection. For translations, it is best to create an article in the Wikipedia for that language and we can link to that. I've removed the promotional blog links you added; you will need WP:RS both here and there. Sam Kuru (talk) 11:58, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Semi-protected edit request on 5 May 2023 edit

Original text : "In most of Western Europe (except Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany), variable-rate mortgages are more common, unlike the fixed-rate mortgage common in the United States."

Proposed change : "Western European countries present a diversified landscape, with some countries (France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark) where fixed-rate mortgages are the norm and some countries (Austria, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden) favouring adjustable-rate mortgages[1]."   Not done for now: Could you provide a page number or similar pointer with that source? Thanks! Actualcpscm (talk) 17:54, 6 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mortgage loanMortgage – Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:CONCISE. Already redirects here anyway.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  18:58, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Support. Seems like the most natural and common name that users would be looking for. No issues with ambiguity arise, so going with the more concise name seems to better align with the WP:CRITERIA. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 22:15, 19 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal edit

No responses, so I'm going ahead with the merge per WP:MERGE

I am proposing merging Buydown into Mortgage. Mortgage already contains a section discussing buydowns with pretty much the same exact information as in included in this article, without the various reliability and sourcing issues this stub article contains. It does not appear to be an especially important topic that requires its own page, especially as that article is nearly 20 years old and has never been expanded past a single paragraph.
