Conflict of Interest

I'm a South African and i like Mmusi Maimane, I think he is eloquent, charismatic and most importantly a very smart politician , but this article I do not like, I think it has this tone that says vote for the Democratic Alliance and make Maimane Gauteng Province's premier. I feel it was not written from a neutral stand point and I also feel it was used as a campaigning and an advertising platform in this case. It also didn't come as a surprise to me to see that one of its most contributors is MaimaneForPremier  !!, someone please sort this out Bobbyshabangu (talk) 17:46, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

+1 . The article is written very much in favor of the political individual and it looks like there is considerable edits from someone biased towards the subject. I have added some citation required tags and will clean up as I go.Thuvack | ^talk 08:57, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

I have only made some drive by superficial edits thus far, mainly because I am active on Commons and have been organising SA images there. I haven't even read the whole article. I noticed yesterday the DA political office succession boxes are completely out of date (and that is before they announce the new shadow cabinet post 2014 election), so I will probably have a look at that next but it won't happen overnight as I have other editing priorities. What does "In 1989 Maimane encountered his first anti-apartheid action when strikes hit Dobsonville" mean? Saw, took part in, opposed, or was simply alive at the time?. And were the strikes actually political or economic?101.98.138.52 (talk) 21:44, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

NPOV request in two sections

Understanding that this is a political figure in South Africa, changes to this page may trigger an emotional response by some. I also understand that this article may serve as the 'unbiased perspective' on who this person is. In this significant context, I am highlighting some unacceptable quality issues in the article that need to be remedied prior to making those changes myself. I invite fellow Wikipedians to contribute to this discussion should you feel differently (or, of course, show your support). This is mainly evident in the sections "Leader of the Opposition" and "Leader of the Democratic Alliance".

There are many parts of this article that read like a novel and not like an article. There appears to be two extreme biases 'battling' for control over the narrative in this article (pro and con). I have requested citations and other notices in applicable areas. Other than that, there are spelling mistakes, etc. that are just inexcusable. I will be doing the cleanup if there are no other good suggestions of how to improve the quality of this article.

Here are some examples that make this article of poor quality and I suggest these are amended soonest or removed in totality.

• "Maimane faced the first real test of his leadership" — biased, written like a novel and unverifiable
• "controversy that erupted" — over dramatisation
• "seemingly, the first instruction to Kohler Barnard to delete the post came from former DA leader Helen Zille" — seemingly, used with a source?
• "Maimane set out a new stance" — this should be stated in political terms or otherwise deleted
• "he called on racists" — written like a biased news report
• "Maimane's understanding of the rule of law has been called into question" —ambiguous statement that would require further substantiation beyond even a single source (which it doesn't currently have)
• "embroiled in a controversy"—ambiguous, over-dramatisation through use of weasel words
• "for his controversial racist re-tweet" — biased, unsubstantiated claim without source
• "DA grew its share of the vote in Gauteng substantially"—remove 'substantially' and add actual percentages
• "Maimane at the helm"—true, but strange way to put it

More POV issues

Hi folks - at the start let me point out I have a conflict of interest here as a DA employee, as noted on my user page. So I definitely won't be touching the article myself. Besides some of the issues noted in the previous section, there are some more things I've noticed that seem rather POV.

• In the lede - describing Liberty Church as "deeply conservative" - conservative, sure, but "deeply" seems like an opinion to me? It's cited to a Gareth van Onselen article, but that itself is an opinion piece.
• In the "Leader of the DA" section, in the paragraph about the Diane Kohler-Barnard controversy, there's a lot of opinion written in Wikipedia's voice:
  • "implying that political expediency may trump the merits of the case"
  • "and the fall-out from the affair appears to be threatening Maimane's leadership of the DA." - in any case should be phrased "appeared" not "appears" since it is well in the past now
  • "Maimane appeared increasingly weak in his responses to and management of the affair."
• In general, the latter part of the "Leader of the DA" reads to me like a list of "things Mmusi did wrong" (almost like a "Controversy" section) rather than an NPOV description of his time as Leader of the DA.
