Sister City

edit

Mishawaka has a sister city that should be listed- Shiojiri Japan... it has a park in commemoration of this relationship.

Revert

edit

I reverted to the last edit - if it's "not a suburb", perhaps the term exurb would be more appropriate? Alex 04:46, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

pronunciation

edit

Just wanted to check the stress is on the mish, not on the wa, and that the wa has the vowel of body, not of father. kwami (talk) 08:56, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it appears from dictionary.com that all both are wrong, so I'll change it. kwami (talk) 08:57, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's pronounced "Mish. Ah. Wah. Kah." - I live here. AndrewDBarker (talk) 15:19, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Every single person I know whom actually lives/was raised in Mishawaka or the surrounding area pronounces it /ˌmɪʃəˈwɔːkə/ (mish-uh-WAW-kuh); the stressed syllable is identical to the word walk. Hearing it pronounced any other way is a giveaway that the speaker is not native to the area (much like stressing the neighbouring city as SOUTHbend instead of the correct southBEND). Wrestling

edit

Will continue to remove the wrestling reference after high school football for the following reason. Although there is no doubt a great wrestling (as well as volleyball) tradition in Mishawaka high schools, the reference is solely about football. While wrestling is big, the three Mishawaka high schools have won a combined 11 state football championships since 1920, an amazing feat, one that dwarfs the number of state championships by all other of the city's sports teams combined. The wiki article points out that Mishawaka, per capita, is perhaps the most succesful football city in the state over nearly a century. The wrestling reference dilutes this point.

And I'll continue to revert, since opinions aren't valid. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 17:54, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The above comment is not an opinion. It is fact. Edit warring will be subject to review.

Also, when adding something, we like to have citations. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 18:01, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The legend section has been created so as not to confuse histroy with legend. Wrestling and volleball now have there own sentence. Sister cities have now been added. (See below)

The previous History version is fine. Stop your petty edit-warring. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 18:09, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Concur. The history is the best place for the legend. Could use some copyeditting and sourcing, but does not need to be seperated. —Charles Edward (Talk | Contribs) 18:12, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

With due respect to posters, it is not petty editing. The section reads as if the legend is history, when in fact, research has proven it is certainly almost all untrue. (See historian Merle Blue's work on the subject at the public library.) It dilutes the actually history of the city. Since it is a "story," it probably doesn't belong at all. Sectioning it off is a nice compromise.

You've been reported for violating WP:3RR. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 18:19, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Clearly stating it as legend in the history section would be acceptable. Other articles have similar situations, where exact source of the name is unknown, but the place has a legend about it. The legend is noteworthy and worth inclusion in the history section, as it is a historical legend. Placing a seperate section for legends, and just one paragraph, is not the best good solution. WP:Section recommends have enough content for multiple paragraphs to warrent a new section. For example, Corydon, Indiana and Kokomo, Indiana. —Charles Edward (Talk | Contribs) 18:24, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
It appears that Crotchety Old Man may have violated 3RR first, as the addition of sister cities was not a revert. Nonetheless, although an uninvolved admin, I haven't decided whether to take action on the 3RR issue. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 19:15, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
You'll want to go back and count again. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 19:20, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Penn High School does indeed have a Mishawaka address. All state championships have now been addresssed, including Mishawaka wrestling which COM is adamant about. Sister Cities is a great new addition. Schmucker is out as it should be (only one of many Middle Schools) and the Legend section is still included, although it is a dubious entry and poorly written. Reverting is now damaging good new material.

Penn is in unincorporated St. Joseph County, so it stays out. Reread the talk page, and the article history, and you'll see you're in the minority. Further edit warring will get you blocked. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 12:51, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
And the Sister Cities addition is uncited, so don't bother re-adding until you've got a reliable source to go along with it. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 12:52, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

COM is not citing wrestling. Why? Because it is a fact. Citations are not possible for every single entry. BTW, the wrestling sentence is now in error as the number 11 refers to football titles. Open your mind COM. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.16.133.201 (talk) 13:05, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Read above. The History section is to remain untouched. No one wants it changed to "Legend", except you. And citations should be easy enough to come by for adding the sister cities. Furthermore, any more additions of any state titles need direct citations. Crotchety Old Man (talk) 13:10, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Award for least ADA complient city

edit

I am not terribly comfortable having a bit in the article about this, referenced to a somewhat POV primary source. Is there any secondary sourcing available? If not, I really think it should go. Gtwfan52 (talk) 00:14, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have looked at the reference and now realize that I was in error. I will try to research a second source to verify the award. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I will take back my warning to the IP user. At the time it seemed the IP was removing cited work. HereFord 16:57, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some time during a wikibreak I took, this material but in a different form came back in. Still sourced only to the POV website, an obviously not reliable source. I have removed, both as imroperly sourced negative material and POV. John from Idegon (talk) 16:41, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I need to see if Swanson ES served parts of Mishawaka in the 2000s...
