This is a valid German spelling. The ¨ can be replaced by the letter "e" after the umlauted letter when the umlaut isn't used. ie ä = ae, ö = oe, ü = ue.

German/Norwegian/Swedish?

Does anyone have a good source for that? All I could find are second-hand sources like AskMen or the IMDB, which are notoriously error-prone. Is there a first-hand source? Mad Jack 23:58, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

In an interview by Rick Dees (www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-O38-nmNao) Mädchen states that both her parents are German and that she was given the name beacause it means "pretty, young maiden". It does, however, just mean "girl". The German pronunciation is nearer "med-khyen".

The German word is pronounced "med-chen" with "ch" as a voiceless palatal fricative like in "ich". The "d" is spoken in all german dialects I know. The pronounciation "MAY-chen" in the article can only belong to a special pronounciation of this specific english/american first name. The opening credits of Twin Peaks, Fire Walk With Me spell her name Mädchen.

Proposal

Madchen's name and its origin should be separated. May be it is good to know the name is pronounced in American daily life and how the noun Mädchen is pronounced in Germany. There mus be a difference.

Proposal:

The name Madchen (pronounced [med-chen]) is taken from the German noun "Mädchen" (in German pronounced [mæ:t-çən] with voiceless and unaspirated t). The noun means "girl" is composed of "Maid/Magd" (maiden) and the diminutive suffix "-chen" which means "little". "Mädchen" is earlier an unmarried girl or young woman, today it is similiar to English "girl". "Mädchen" is not a name in German.

An American should check, if [med-chen] really is the way, Americans pronounce it. Because German A is prononced as Spanish A and German Ä is pronounced like English A, it would be best to spell the name Madchen. Maedchen would be misleading for Americans.

2011 Image

I took this photo in 2011 at the set of Psych season 6: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:M%C3%A4dchen_Amick.jpg and put it on the page. Mädchen found the image on the page and didn't like it. I received a phone call from Mädchen's manager asking me to remove this photo, and I consider that a polite thing to do. Somebody can put up a different image. If you keep putting the image back on the Wikipedia page, I'll have to remove it from the commons area. (Guess who's going to be receiving phone calls?) Thank you. I'm sorry she is unhappy with the photo. We generally include an image of the subject whenever possible. This photo has been released under Creative Commons and is otherwise suitable. If she/her publicist/anyone else would like to release another photo we might use that.

I'm not sure what rights you feel you have, but you seem to misunderstand. Now that it has been released by the photographer (you), ANYONE is free to copy, distribute, transmit and adapt it as they see fit, so long as attribute it and apply the same license to the new work. I'm not here discussing legalities with you, I'm discussing courtesies. She is a person, and would prefer that this photo not be on her Wikipedia page. I took the photo, and so feel somewhat obligated toward said courtesy. Yes, you're right, you can take the Commons photo and do whatever you want with it... and I'll get another phone call. I'm asking you to look beyond the "I'm a photographer with such-and-such rights so that's what I do" attitude, which is more than common these days. Totoro33 (talk) 02:14, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

We have had very similar discussions elsewhere. If a public figure doesn't like a freely licensed photo of them, the best way to remedy the situation is to release the rights on a "better" photo. If Amick doesn't like the photo we have, she might have a way of fixing that. New image

OTRS received a photo of Mädchen Amick. I see that the article has a photo. In my opinion, this one is better, and should be the one in the info box. (It may also be considered to use both.)

I posted the above before reading the prior section, which doesn't change much, it is still the consensus of editors which determines the selection of photograph, but given the suggestion in the section above, namely that if she doesn't like the photo, one solution is to provide a replacement. She has done so, which means we would need a very good reason to not swap out the images. (If the replacement was clearly a bad photo, that might be a reason, but it is a high quality photo.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:27, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

I had been contacted regarding this and essentially said what has been said here (see my talk page). IMO, the new photo is clearly superior to the prior photo, but that isn't saying much. I can, however, easily see possible future photos that would be more, um, "objective", I guess. This photo is rather heavily processed. - SummerPhD (talk) 03:06, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
