Schiltz not Frieden

I just entered a rough date for the transition as I don't recall for sure and the MoD is a mess. What's certain is that Schiltz is no Minister of Defense (also other ministries).

I'm wondering about the Military Branch entry. The police is not part of the military (the gendarmerie used to be) it is an entirely civilian force. The confusion might stem from the fact that unlike any other democracy I know of the Police, Army and Justice recently came under the control of a single minister (no longer the case now). If there are no objections I will strike mention of the police from that list.

If there is some interest for slightly outdated data (6-7 years old, directly from the army I required it for a briefing for an MP) I can try to add more detail to the army's numerical strength (I don't think it's actually as low as stated). Though obviously my data predates the latest reforms.--Caranorn 20:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I created a list of Ministers of Defence. Schiltz became minister on 22 February 2006, which you can see in Mémorial here.

Since the Gendarmerie was merged into the Grand Ducal Police in 2000, continued reference to it is certainly inappropriate. Presumably, the source of that was not misinterpretation by the contributor, but by the authors of the CIA World Factbook, who have made nice careers out of making such mistakes.

There is very detailed information at the Army's official website, which gives a complete account, down to the number of soldiers and vehicles in each platoon (even section in some cases), that touts itself as being up-to-date. That's probably the best resource that is easy to cite and easy for readers to access, so I'd use that. Bastin 00:34, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I was actually referring to more detailled data then on the Army's website (at the time I made the request for a member of parliament, the data is not confidential so I could use it, but I'll first compare it to what's on the Army site (it was not up to date last year) now (I last looked at that in detail last year for a friend)). Females

From the article, I would guess females are not allowed to be part of the Luxembourg military but this is not particularly clear Nil Einne 12:09, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

In Fiction

Sorry, but a reference to a fictonal event in one episode of a TV show is not significant information about Luxembourg's military. It's not really even signifcant information about M*A*S*H. Errors--increasingly typical Wikipedia superficiality replete with erroneous &/or incomplete information

In the past I've corrected an occasional error and/or provided a link when necessary and/or relevant. But, as far as this article is concerned, I just don't know where to start, if not almost from scratch concerning certain subheads.

The article is full of errors, e.g. "2 Grades and insignia": while the rank of general exists, the term Flag Officer is not used; officially there are no warrant officers in the Luxembourg Army, what is referred to in this entry as warrant officer is merely an Aspirant-Officier, which could at best be labeled an officer candidate, who after the initial 13 weeks of basic training might be admitted as a cadet [[1]]. Whoever worked on this article seems to have no idea of the difference between a cadet and a warrant officer.

Likewise the statement, under "3 Careers", that "[t]hose who have completed high school will enter a special 13-week-basic training in the army as warrant officer, thus visiting the military officer school after for 4 years (normally in Brussels, Belgium), before becoming a lieutenant in the Luxembourg army", is both misleading and erroneous. It isn't sufficient "to have completed high school [to] enter a special 13-week-basic training," HS must be completed with a Baccalauréat degree; "... as warrant officer", see supra; "thus visiting the military officer school after for 4 years (normally in Brussels, Belgium)" is also nonsense since any Aspirant-Officier will either attend the Ecole Royale Militaire de Bruxelles, Belgium, or the Ecoles Militaires de Coëtquidan (a.k.a. Écoles de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan, or simply as Saint-Cyr), France; "before becoming a lieutenant " should read "before being commissioned as second lieutenant." ...

I suggest that the people who've amused themselves writing this article at least take the time and check the web site of the Luxembourg army (Armée luxembourgeoise [2]), verify, for example, certain procedures (e.g. officer's career [3]), et cetera. That way they'll avoid an article that is substandard, which can only give Wkipedia disrepute as being unreliable, among others.

Editing Queries/Concerns

Hi all, Over the coming weeks I will be comprehensively editing this article. Upon reading it, I have noted concerns regarding sources and citations. Though I am unable to conduct extremely extensive research myself, I will be consulting outside sources in order to confirm or refute information within the text. If a proper source is not cited, I will insert a "citation needed" link, which is beneficial in indicating to other Wikipedians that additional research is necessary. One of the greatest textual concerns I have is the continuity of spelling practices throughout the article. For example, in some cases, the European spelling of "organise" appears, with the more Western "organize" appearing in the same paragraph. Additionally, I would like to establish continuity regarding the Oxford (serial) comma throughout lists in the article. Incurbust (talk) 01:18, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

@Incurbust: I've just completed my copy-editing, favoring the serial comma (particularly helpful in this article, with a number of compound elements in series). I've tried not to introduce any Americanisms into this article, but some may have slipped through. I also supplied some references but didn't do a complete job. There are many pages (in French, of course) at the Luxembourg Army website that support the uncited text, and my "cite web" templates, with many parameters filled in, can be copied and reworked for consistency. Name change

Should this page not be called "Luxembourg Army" ? I'm wondering why it isn't. I can see the page was moved in 2021. The actual website is called https://armee.public.lu/ and says "Letzebuerger Armei" at the top. That does not translate to Luxembourg Armed Forces, but to Luxembourg Army. The website only mentions the "army", not "armed forces". As far as I can understand from the website, the few planes Luxembourg owns are described as a component of the army, not a separate air force.
