Lists of journals by topic edit

Currently, we have a mix of

  • List of journal-type in field
  • List of field journal-type

I propose we streamline everything to "List of field journal-type" as it is the most used of the two (and IMO sounds better too), and it would also match (at least most of the time) the relevant category name. In addition, some journals are labelled as "scientific" others as "academic" and others as "scholarly", I propose we keep it short and sweet and just use "journals". AKA, after the relevant moves, the list would go from this

Now

to (baring alphabetization mistakes, and nevermind the redlinks for now)

  • Good initiative! I agree with both of your improvements for lists of journals by topic. -- SchreyP (talk) 08:12, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Excellent! (Minor tweak: "List of theology journals). The disparate naming of all these lists has irritated me for a long time, without getting over the threshold todo something about it... Kudos! --Crusio (talk) 10:59, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Headbomb's proposed streamlining makes sense, and it would be an improvement. Thanks for noticing this, Headbomb. ----Steve Quinn (talk) 00:31, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Well it hasn't be the longest of times (~3 days), but I think it's pretty clear were consensus lies. I'll make the moves. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 05:46, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Lists of journals by publisher edit

A bit like above, the lists of journals by publisher could be standardized. Currently we have

  • List of journals published by Foo
  • List of Foo journals

I propose we change this

into this

or this

Of the two proposals, I would favor the first. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 01:31, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • I prefer the first proposal for lists of journals by publisher. -- SchreyP (talk) 08:12, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • I also prefer the first solution. (And yet another pedantic tweak: "List of Australian Research Council theology journals") --Crusio (talk) 11:02, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • I think the first proposal is the best method of standardization. ---- Steve Quinn (talk) 00:37, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Preliminary discussion on an idea for renaming edit

At WP:SAL we have long differentiated between two types of list article:

  1. Informational lists (which are articles in list format, designed to convey information about a topic to the reader)
  2. Navigational lists (which are designed not to convey any information about the topic, and simply "list" articles that relate to the topic)

Our Policies and Guidelines apply to these two types of "lists" differently (for example, in an informational list we need to supply citations to verify the information... while a Navigational list we would not.) This sometimes causes confusion since both types of list are entitled "List of...". Editors are not always clear which class a particular list falls into. I have suggested at WT:SAL that it might be helpful to use two different words to describe these two types of lists... the first type (Informational lists) would continue to be called "List of...". The second would be called "Index of...".
To see if my suggestion would work in reality, I thought I would ask for the opinions of editors at one of the "list" articles that would be affected. How would people feel about renaming this page: Index of academic journals?

Note... This is not a formal move request. Blueboar (talk) 14:35, 6 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 21 July 2015 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: page moved. (non-admin closure) Just need help with the deletion of the target page. And, the proposal to move "Lists of foo" to "Index of foo lists" would have too big of an impact to be discussed just here. -- Orduin Discuss 18:48, 14 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of lists of academic journalsLists of academic journalsSMcCandlish (talk · contribs) moved Lists of academic journals to List of lists of academic journals, saying this was 'standard naming' [1]. This is clearly untrue, given 'list of lists' yields no result on Wikipedia, except for this article. The standard naming is 'Lists of ...' (see 'Lists of' search results vs List of lists search results) , and the "List of list of...'articles all redirect to 'Lists of...' articles. • The problem is that this isn't a list of journals (there is not a single journal listed on the page)... it's a list of Wikipedia articles (which all happen to be in list format). With that in mind...
Alternative suggestion - rename to: Index of lists of academic journals. I think the term INDEX would better note what the purpose of this page is... it's a navigational page pointing editors to related articles. Blueboar (talk) 16:57, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
And the title isn't List of... but Lists of..., just like Lists of stadiums isn't a list of stadium, but a list of lists of stadiums. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 20:12, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Which I would also suggest should be renamed to Index of lists of stadiums or (even better) to Index of stadium lists Blueboar (talk) 20:23, 21 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
There are quite a lot of entries in Category:Lists of lists and List of lists of lists. "Lists of..." seems to be the usual way that meta-lists are titled on Wikipedia (no opinion on how they should be titled, just noting apparent status quo). Plantdrew (talk)
You moved it from Lists of academic journals, not List of academic journals. The List of page was a redirect to the Lists of article prior to your moves. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 03:28, 25 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

When I see the title Lists of X (or even List of lists of X, my initial expectation is that I will be sent an informational article (in list format) outlining various noteworthy published lists relating to X ... For example, an article entitled Lists of best selling books would be an informational article (in list format) that includes the The New York Times Best Seller list, Publishers Weekly list of bestselling novels in the United States, Oprah's Book Club, etc.... all of which are well known published lists of best selling books. These lists that are being listed may or may not have their own articles (note-worthy not always being the same as Notable) Blueboar (talk) 15:43, 24 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment Headbomb, your original search missed the List of lists of console titles. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:47, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support original nomination. Obviously the current title is not ideal and it makes sense to follow the naming convention that is used for hundreds of other pages. An out of the way talk page like this is not the place to change the convention from "Lists of ..." to "Index of ...". That discussion should be taken up at whichever guideline/policy talk page is most appropriate. Jenks24 (talk) 06:53, 12 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support proposed title, per Jenks.--Cúchullain t/c 16:22, 12 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Suggested title change edit

The list of accounting journals is technically a list of lists of lists of accounting journals, so I propose changing the name to that. This is so the hierarchy on Lists of lists of lists and proposed Draft:List_of_lists_of_lists_of_lists becomes more clear.

New sublist on the page edit

I would like to add a new list which would be Undergraduate Research Journals.

It (the list) would accept only those journals which allow submission from institutions inside and outside of the publishing institution.

Any discussion of this? Countercheck (talk) 02:38, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
