Semi-protection

To the anonymous users who keep reverting this article back to this version, will you please discuss it and not just keeping on acting up until you get what you want. I have protected the page to stop this stuff. The problems are fair clear: there is never going to be an objective way to determine the "best" Tamil films and language like "It has become a super hit and the Chennai 600028 team has come once again with a brilliant effort" is completely biased and not neutral. That's the problem people are having with it. We need to figure out a more objective measure like something basic (most awards won, which isn't great, or just a simple box office numbers, which have to based on something). Otherwise we have an article where people will just playing with it everyday for no good reason other than different opinions. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:08, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Rajnikanth's Shivaji had grossed $28,155,000 and it is an industrial record and Kamalhaasan's Dasavataram had grossed $57,766,000, but these two films are not marked as industrial record Jimgra (talk) 13:48, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

In the list of the top 10 movies of kollywood, Vassol Raja MBBS has grossed $ 10 millions in the box office (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasool_Raja#cite_note-0). But in the lis we can see Padayappa which is listed without any link and it has grossed only $9,354,000, same for Thiruttu Payale with $9,000,000. Could you please correct this and put Vassol raja in the appropriate ranking? Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.142.250.128 (talk) 22:01, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

... I don't think anything could be done based on this request from Maharathan as there is no proof about the amount spent on the promotions and also regarding the revenues from the television programs - like audio release/making of Enthiran movie/making of Enthiran songs etc.. Also, not sure about the user's claim on the wrong reports on box office collections, the figures in the report could be in gross or net - a figure in gross will always be higher than the net. - EChanakya

How & Why are the Gross earnings converted to US Dollars ($$$) instead of INR?

US Dollar rates keep fluctuating all the time. For example Historic USD to INR is given here.In 1950 it was Rs 4.76p , 1960 : Rs 4.67p, 1970 :Rs7.86, 1980 : Rs7.86, 1990 Rs 17.50 and for 2000 it was Rs 44.94 etc. So for a movie like P. U. hinnappa’s Uthamaputhiran (1940) the collection shows $101,000.Can anyone explain on what exchange rate the movie was converted.(Was it at 1940 rates or something recent).

If the $ Rate collection is based on historic exchange rates, then it can be considered only partially correct, as there are lot of fluctuations and unequall rise in the USD to INR exchange and were never graduall. As you can see from the earlier tabulation; the rates raised rapidly from 1990’s (a sudden 100% rise) and somewhere in 2003’s the exchange rates were close to Rs 50 and then again it dropped to Rs 40.After all the above calculations ,the collection value has to be adjusted again for today’s Price(i.e. adjust to inflation-Value of Rs 10 in 1947 will be worth Rs 511.12p in 2010).This data is available from the ‘Office of Economic Advisor’-Finance Ministry. But in the latter case Inflation was always gradual as we experience all the time.

But if the rates for the above mentioned 1940 movie were converted from recent exchange rates then the whole data is skewed. The results would be totally misleading. For better judgment why don’t we stick to INR rates only and simply equate the gross earnings by adjusting for inflation. That would give us the correct yardstick to measure the returns. Bollywood industry follows the same pattern.

And moreover some earnings lack source and for some; there is none.

Use of dollars helps comparison with other film industries and acts as a deflator of rupee fluctuations. Exchange rates are annual closing rates published in eh.net. Source collection is a work in progress. For starters, see tamilcinema.com archives. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.193.50.203 (talk) 19:36, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

$84,000,000 for Enthiran is a single self-published source

Note that there is an impressive looking list of seven footnotes against Enthiran, however only one footnote actually supports the figure that has been cherry-picked and that is a publicity press release by the film promoters. The source quotes what appears to be a rounded-up estimate of possible box-office income rather than anything than might relate to published accounts or other verifiable quality sources. FOR THE QUARTER ENDED 31st DECEMBER’ 2010, the Revenues grew by 51.36% to Rs.597.99 crores (which includes 179 crores from Enthiran). The Net Profit (PAT) also was higher by 48.41% at Rs.225.49 crores.

Questionable claims about Kabali's financial data

Insanely high box office values for Kabali have been called out by IBT as being fake. IBT even went so far as to quote an analyst:

"Some leading online publications have been falsely reporting about the numbers about the box office collection of Rajinikanth's film for the last 13 days. The numbers posted by them clearly shows that it is written without doing a proper research ... they have added the pre-release business with its box office collection which shows that they are not aware of how a film's business is calculated as they report "Kabali" to have grossed over Rs. 675 crore worldwide in 13 days"

IBT's sources place the estimates at 309-350 crore. While I haven't personally seen the 675 crore claim, I have seen 650 crore being claimed by Indian Express and 631 claimed by Financial Express, and I don't think they can be trusted for accurately reporting Kabali's figures considering they're doing the exact thing IBT is criticizing, i.e. lumping the pre-release financials in with the box office data. In this edit I adjusted the figures back to the IBT range of 309-350. The reference that was there India Today, cited Financial Express as the source of the info and even expressed some doubt with the statement, "If reports are to go by, Kabali has equalled the worldwide collections of Baahubali and surpassed Salman Khan's Sultan". To avoid getting caught up in Kabali's promotional machine, we need to be extraordinarily circumspect about the financial information we print, and if that means we're days or weeks behind the claim-of-the-day, that is fine. Wikipedia has no deadline, and is not a breaking news source. We are not here to sell tickets to Kabali by being part of the spectacle. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:33, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Suggestion to have the collections in ascending order.

There have been around 20 tamil films that have crossed the 100 crore mark.Out of them, some 5 or 6 have even crossed the 200 crore mark.Having said that,I really dont think that mankatha should be in the top 10 grossing movies of all time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arunkxip (talkcontribs) 18:34, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Arunkxip - Where exactly are you seeing Mankatha being listed as one of the "top 10 grossing movies of all time"? I only see the title in "Top grossers by year", which suggests to me that maybe you are misinterpreting the heading. Also, please remember to sign your posts by typing four tildes ~~~~.   Not done: - Sunil3962 - Google searches are not sufficient as references. Neither are blogs or other user-generated sites. The claims of 600-675+ crore box office gross are coming out of one source, Financial Express. Their estimates have been disputed by both IBT and Firstpost. Since Wikipedia has no deadline, we are in no rush to update this information, and the prudent approach is to wait a few weeks for the marketing hype to die down, and then report the independently verified estimates from our reliable mainstream sources if/when they start to filter in. After all, we're not here to promote Kabali or to present late-breaking news--we're here to carefully assemble a collection of information that will be useful years from now, not just right this minute. Suggestion

I have reworked the page according to List of highest-grossing films and List of highest-grossing Bollywood films, so only the highest-grossing film of every year should be listed (for 2010 it's Singam so far!). Moreover, I think, the figures should be given in Indian rupees only. Johannes003 (talk) 20:01, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Singam is not No.1 this year. Sun Pictures have a infamous history of exaggerated claims. The company also declared that Vettaikaaran grossed more than Ayan. Now, the media is washed with news about losses piled by its distributors. Sify.com has replaced Singam with Raavanan at top spot after just 3 weeks.
Hey, I know that rumor and know that's wrong, but Singam really did gross a lot, a lot more than Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. Here again, don't go by any charts man! (By the way, if you compare this week's Sify chart, it says Raavanan - average and Singam - hit, does this make sense to you? And Kalavani is on third now, so is that film one of the top grossing film of this year? Think practical! Forget this stupid charts, Rediff is a highly reliable source (yeah, it was Rediff that said so and not Sun Pictures)!! Work with such sites and most importantly work with gross figures and not charts! Johannes003 (talk) 11:38, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Undone: This request has been undone. 3mi1y (talk) 18:00, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
I accepted this last night because it seemed fairly obvious to me after reading the relevant articles, but I see now reading the talk page that this seems contentious. The counterargument seems to be that these were filmed in both Tamil and Telugu, and so qualify as both Tamil films and Telugu films. But the lead here seems to explicitly say that "filmed in Tamil" is not the same thing as "Tamil film", and the defining feature is being based in Chennai:
Tamil cinema, popularly known as Kollywood, is the filmmaking industry based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The films are made primarily in Tamil language.
This does not imply that all Tamil language films are Tamil cinema, in much the same way that "Americans primarily speak English" does not imply that all English speakers are Americans.
I have little desire to start an edit war over films I had not heard of before last night, but if consensus is to keep them on the list, may I suggest reworking that phrase and renaming the page to indicate that this is a list of Tamil language films, not just a list of Tamil films? Otherwise, this will probably happen again.

@3mi1y That's an interesting point. Thank you for bringing it up.
The page does conflate all films shot in Tamil language with all movies made in Kollywood (ie. the film industry based in Chennai). Needs a work around. @Kailash29792, thoughts? -- Ab207 (talk) 05:52, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
