Rhythm Club Fire of 1940
I couldn't help but notice that the Rhythm Club Fire of 1940 was omitted from the historic fires article. The only thing this fire didn't have in common with the other structural or building fires is that its victims were all black. It's insulting to see that this fire is consistently ignored in the popular websites about fires. You could remedy this - there is enough information about it online to afford it some mention.

Comment by another user: The Oakland Hills fire of 1991 item mentions a number of dwellings destroyed but this is inconsistent with the figures given in the main article for it. Anyone know the right number?
Added the Hotel Vendome Fire in Boston (1972), which resulted in the death of 9 firefighters, also the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 - listed as a city or area fire but not as a structure fire, altho the London Fire was - which I guess argues the question - should either be listed as structure fires? I would suggest that the "Brimingham Church Fire" of 1902 be deleted, as there was no fire, but the people died because of panic/stampede because they thought they heard someone yell 'fire'. This was mentioned in the book "Book of Lists 3". Joeylawn (talk) 23:15, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Article length
Would anyone mind if two lists were created, one for structures and one for cities? that way we could seperate modern fires from antiquity more easily? Its hard to add additional categories and there are more recorded modern day fires any thoughts out there?Ottawa4ever (talk) 19:34, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Criteria for inclusion
This article is an absolute mess. I've removed a few patently non-notable inclusions (as per WP:BOLD), and a few which would be categorised as explosions rather than fires (should even 9/11 be on this particular list - seriously?), but it desperately needs some kind of cut-off point for inclusion, otherwise people are just going to add any old fire from their own location even when there is clearly nothing 'historic' about it in a wider sense. Fatal fires happen every day in every country and with the best will in the world they can't, and shouldn't, all be eligible for inclusion at will. Two examples I left on for now - 2008 warehouse fires in England and Mexico with 4 and 5 fatalities respectively. Tragic for those involved, certainly, but historic? Really?
I would suggest that in the buildings/structural fires section a minimum of 20 fatalities should be the cut-off in most cases, although exceptions could obviously be made for fires with fewer or no fatalities which are beyond question 'historic' (e.g. the Reichstag, or the London New Cross fire for the huge effect it had on race relations in the UK at the time). The key word though must be 'historic', either because of a high fatality count or some political/social impact above and beyond the fire itself.
Further, that a fire without an active wikilink to a specific article must be supported by an inline citation to merit inclusion.
Finally, there should be a standardised format, along the lines of:
- 1946 - Winecoff Hotel Fire, Atlanta, Georgia (December 7) - 119 fatalities
- 1947 - Ballantyne's Department Store fire, Christchurch, New Zealand (18 November) - 41 fatalities
I would be quite happy (and would have time in the next few weeks) to go through, and standardise, the list if there are no objections. Any comments? Draggleduck (talk) 07:18, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- I like most of this. One thing i would add though is sometimes theres also an engineering impact to these fires. Even though a building doesnt have a large fatality event it may be included in many peer reviewed journals outlining the signifigance to other buildinsg behaviour. Thats why WTC 7 is an important fire (that for the time being, is not proven to be an explosion. I think above all the criteria for inclusion is secondary sources. If the fire cant be sourced and cant be sourced as to why its importnat to the article it will be removed. At least thats my two sense i do agree theres a danger that any old fire of lil importance isnt included. I agree high fatality and political/impact are important crtierias. I wish to propose a removal of all terrorist acts and act of war listed on this article, why? during those times, fire will always happen. If nobody or have anything to say within a week, I will steps in and remove them myself. Donnie Park (talk) 20:35, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Dawson was destroyed by fire three times, the first I think in the early "spring" of 1899 (it was 40 below +) and twice more before, I think, 1902; the current town, or what's left of it, is from the third rebuilding. Don't have the exact dates or would add them. While other small towns in Canada also had fires, these were significant due to the importance of the town and that they happened during its gold rush heyday).Skookum1 (talk) 13:29, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Recent tagging
This edit is unique; [2] but i think (my poinion alone) in some ways it may be the wrong tag/ or rather the wrong solution. Most of the recent additions are based on associative wiki articles which define the fires as notable. Where they arent and are not covered in enduring lasting coverage they are lacking notability, or are merely in the news. I think those who have no article or have no enduring qualities should be removed from the list. Further the points raised 'historical perspective' How can something 1 year old really be defined as historical, that in a sense i think is valid to tag on, but things can be historical an event which has a reprocussion can only be a few weeks old, but the remedy i think is just to re-name the article and clarify it as in 'List of notable fires'.
