Talk:List of best-selling Nintendo 3DS video games

Too early for such a list? edit

I don't know, but this seems a bit early for such a list IMO, especially with only one item on it. I mean, the 3DS is still in its infancy. –MuZemike 16:06, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The list is of million-copy sellers, of which there is one. Opinions of whether it is too early or if a certain number of games are required is irrelevant (no offense). -128.151.22.155 (talk) 17:05, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
To be fair most consoles don't have a list of their own and are simply part of the list of best-selling video games page. It is only those that are of significant length that have their own article. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.θɒn/ (talk) 18:38, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I say remove it until there are over ten on the list. AmericanLeMans (talk) 20:29, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
If we do that, it should at least be mentioned on the list of best-selling video games page. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.θɒn/ (talk) 21:26, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I believe It is not too early for such a list I have great enjoyment from this list2601:185:8202:F12:DC26:694D:4307:D42E (talk) 07:26, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Perry Langill of perrylangill.comReply

Table format edit

Since it was based on a misapprehension, I have reverted the article to the table format. The "best selling video games" articles are "in the process" of being converted to the table format which was discussed on the list of best-selling video games talk page some times ago. Currently, the only one that has been completed is list of best-selling Xbox 360 video games, but it is planned for them all to be converted eventually, and once that is done, to convert the main article. Since it takes so long to convert a whole long list, converting those with their own article first saves a lot of time and effort in the long run, and means that it doesn't all have to be done at once. "In the process" is in scare quotes simply because it isn't an ongoing process that converts the pages, but one page is done at a time. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.θɒn/ (talk) 18:48, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The table format is a bit of a pain in the ass, especially when the lists get big. That's why it was tried before and rejected. -Zomic13 (talk) 00:48, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
When was it tried before? It was discussed at list of best-selling video games about 7 months ago (see Talk:List of best-selling video games/Archive 7#Table format (again)), and since then no one has created a table-formatted top sellers list AFAIK (other than myself when using that format). If you want to really discuss it properly though, I'd suggest doing it at Talk:List of best-selling video games#Table format (follow-up) rather than here, since far more editors are likely to see any comments and be able to chip in, and it effects far more articles than just this one. Note that the format I have used here is of the form discussed 7 months ago, but there is no reason why it can't be simplified. I personally feel that a table format is better than the existing one, even if we just use the "title", "sales" and "sales breakdown" columns, as it is far easier to read off the figures and see breakdowns than if everything is just squashed together into a bullet pointed line, and the added space around entries makes the titles slightly easier to read as well. Alphathon /'æl.f'æ.θɒn/ (talk) 01:10, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
It was tried years ago (like four years ago). Despite the extra effort to add/edit, and my initial annoyance (sorry if my other comment was harsh), I'm starting to like it. It is neater and I especially like the "Sales Breakdown" column. Keep up the good work. -Zomic13 (talk) 04:12, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry about it, nothing you've said seemed harsh to me. I'd rather do something right rather than just doing it "my way" for the sake of it, so criticism is always welcome (as long as it isn't just a personal attack or something, which yours certainly wasn't). Nasdaq/Vgchartz source edit

So recently, the chart has been updated with sales numbers from a Nasdaq, which I would think would typically be a reliable source for such things. However, the article pretty clearly cites VGChartz as it's source? So, is this considered a bad source, because it ultimately traces back to VGChartz, a source that isn't acceptable to use on Wikipedia per WP:VG/S? Or is it acceptable because it was reported through what was ultimately a reliable source, and we're to assume that the reliable source checked out these actual numbers or something? Wasn't sure which way to go on this one, or if there was precedents for stuff like this in the past... Sergecross73 msg me 18:39, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think the source in this case is actually Benzinga.com, not NASDAQ, and the actual article is posted on community.nasdaq.com. I'm not sure how that part of their site works, but it may well be user-generated (I'll look into it later), and the page states "The views and opinions expressed herein are the views and opinions of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of The NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc." Alphathon /'æɫfə.θɒn/ (talk) 18:50, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I think you're right. It appears to be nothing more than a user-generated blog that's quoting VGChartz... Sergecross73 msg me 18:56, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

What about Kirby Triple Deluxe? edit

Is it one of best-selling Nintendo 3DS video games — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.19.117.248 (talk) 16:29, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

That came out pretty recently, right? I don't think it has cracked 1 million since the last time Nintendo gave a quarterly report on sales. Sergecross73 msg me 17:03, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura have sold 1.39 million in Japan edit

I'm not a Yo-Kai Watch fan but I found this: https://www.destructoid.com/15-of-top-20-selling-games-in-japan-are-on-handhelds-408513.phtml Its a link that shows top selling games in Japan and it says that Yo-Kai watch 3 sushi / tempura has sold over 1 million units so someone should put that in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.243.33.25 (talk) 21:16, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Also where's Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS in the list, also Pokemon Rumble Blast sold 1.08 million units in 2012, if you click this link for proof: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2012/120427e.pdf (talk) 21:10, 5 February 2017

Those archive links are blank. Thankfully, the page was simply moved, so I went ahead and fixed the citations manually. NotJim99 (talk) 18:06, 20 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Star Fox 64 3D and sales numbers of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D edit

As to avoid a potential edit war, I'm posting the following here in the hope to reach consensus about the edits that were made (again after a revert) in the last days. These edits add Star Fox 64 3D to the list with sales of 3.73 million units and update the global sales number of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D from 1.52 million units to 1.53 million units.

I am personally against these edits for the following reasons. First of all Star Fox 64 3D has no sources cited indicating its sales number. It's Wikipedia Page on the other hand does state sales of more than 1 million, so it'd be possible to change the number to 1 million. However, the 1 million sales indication on Star Fox 64 3D's page is also questionable. The following is described on that page "(...) the game was inducted into the Nintendo Selects range in Europe, indicating global sales of over 1 million units.". The sources stated for this statement do not show that the game has reached 1 million sales. Furthermore, the Wikipedia Page on Nintendo Selects does not state anywhere that games with a Nintendo Selects label need to have reached 1 million sales. The only statement made is "Nintendo Selects (...) is (...) to promote video games (...) that have sold well.", with no indication of what "sold well" means. Neither is there any source for this claim that could give more information on the specific sales number that would need to be reached for a game to be qualified for a Nintendo Selects label. For the following reasons I suggest not adding Star Fox 64 3D to the list.

Second of all, the source specified for Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D states that the game has sold 152 in ten thousands (i.e. 1.52 million), not the 1.53 million as per the edit. The Wikipedia Page on Donkey Kong Country Returns (which includes Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D) doesn't state 1.53 million sales either, reporting 1.43 million units sold. I have checked all Supplementary Information about Earnings Releases reported after 2014 Q4 up to 2018 Q3 to see if there were any updated sales figures, however I have been unable to find those. Therefore I think we should not change these sale numbers to 1.53 million.

I have currently added a Citation Needed to the Star Fox 64 3D entry on this page to indicate the lack of sources for this statement. I have also added this same notion to the Star Fox 64 3D page. On the Donkey Kong Country Returns page I have updated the sales numbers from 1.43 million to 1.52 million since these numbers are more up-to-date (difference of 1 year) and are both from Nintendo's IR reports. Agreed. I’ve removed the edits - people need to provide the exact sources here, as references, not just vaguely allude to them in edit summaries. If they can provide actual reliable sources, then I’ll remove my objection, but in my experience, many editors frequently offer fake, wrongly synthesized, or unreliably sourced figures, so I’m not one to just “take their word on it”. Sales Breakdown edit

Further to a conversation on Talk:List of best-selling Nintendo Switch video games#"U.S." sales vs. "overseas" sales, which led to the removal of the 'sales breakdown' column on both List of best-selling Wii U video games and List of best-selling Nintendo Switch video games, I don't believe the sales breakdown here is useful to maintain, as the numbers get out of date and imbalanced from each other more quickly than the total sales do.

I'm leaving this here for discussion for now, but may come back to make this change at a later time. ATMarsdenTalk 11:01, 25 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I support it being applied here too. Sergecross73 msg me 17:24, 26 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Many games included in special bundles missing the label edit

A lot of games on this list have been included in a bundle with a 3DS or 2DS system at least once in their lifetime. I've already been getting this fixed and the most recent fixes have been to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds SQUIDFrontiers (talk) 16:01, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
