Alumnae and References edit

Lady Seymour is listed under alumnae. Please stop adding her to the alumni list as well. If you think that alumnae and alumni should be merged, please suggest this instead.

I have been working my way down the list providing references to boost the status of this article. I have reached 'alumni of the College, others'. If you add a name before that point, please provide a reference or 'citation needed'.

Request edit

Whoever it is that keeps changiong or deleting OS form the list please stop. A lot of hard work goes into adding these names. Whilst i and others appreciate that some need references please simply add "needs citation". A number of OS have been deleted incorectly - even ones that are mentioned in TE Muir's book! eg John Desmond Bernall. Why? Thanks.

Eighth Victoria Cross Winner? edit

According to Hewitson, Stonyhurst College, Present and Past (1878, Fishergate, Preston), page 265, among Stonyhurst's alumni is a man named Lieutenant General Hon. Henry Hugh Clifford VC CB. He won the Victoria Cross for gallant conduct at the Battle of Inkerman in the Crimean War. Either the author has confused him with the other Hugh Clifford who went to Stonyhurst and made a mistake, or the College has a forgotten VC winner. I've looked him up on the internet but cannot find any mention of his schooling. The family appears to have had strong links to the school and is related to the Weld family (HHC is Thomas Weld's grandson). Can anyone clear this up? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.156.197.117 (talk) 10:56, 1 April 2008 (UTC) this query came up a number of years ago. He is not an OS. The confusion arose from his counsin who had the same name and who did attend the school.Reply

Alumni edit

If I remember my Latin, the alumni/ae isn't required: alumni covers mixed genders. Charles Matthews (talk) 13:00, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

'Alumni' is strictly speaking masculine. The school uses alumni/ae.

As it says at alumnus, Traditionally, the masculine plural alumni has been used for groups composed of both sexes and is still widely so used. And I believe that's grammatical. We can take it that "Stonyhurst alumni/ae" is the specific term in use, though? Charles Matthews (talk) 17:34, 22 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you are right, though I think the school still uses alumni/ae (perhaps conscious that it has only been co-educational for the last ten years). I think it is quite useful to maintain the distinction as the page splits alumni from alumnae, which is sensible as the notable alumni far outnumber the alumnae, whose names would otherwise be lost amid the list. What do you think? 163.1.126.12 (talk) 17:17, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

References edit

I have not been able to reference the following (St Omers - Stonyhurst alumnae):

  • Prince Louis Aloy de Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Bartenstein
  • Charles Talbot
  • Cristina Alvarado Torija
  • Countess Bruno de Bazelaire de Lesseux
  • Grace Cheung

If anyone can provide sources for these names, it would help to improve the article and get it up to the next status. I will work down the remainder of the list when I can. Orexis bouleutike (talk) 19:07, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
