If you look in the template above, there is a question mark icon indicating that someone has already raised this issue. (That is the 'official' way to ask.)
In practice it may be that pictures of these engines are few and far between, and any decent ones are likely to be copyrighted, as are any pictures of 'Thomas'. There were only ten examples built, and all were scrapped in the early 1960s. -- EdJogg (talk) 13:36, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

There is an 'official LBSCR' photo from June 1913 reproduced in D.L. Bradley's Locomotives of the LB&SCR Part 3, between pages 124 and 125, which is bound to be out of copyright if anyone has access to the book and a scanner. --Das48 (talk) 14:08, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes and yes; I assume that you mean fig. 108 "E2 No. 100 in works grey, June 1913. Short side tanks and lever reverse", but are you sure it's out of copyright? That book was published September 1974, and the image is uncredited. Official works photos were primarily taken for the company's internal records, not necessarily for publication (although many were indeed sent to magazines such as The Railway Magazine). If this was first publication, it's very much in copyright. Bradley died circa 1985. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:01, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
No I am not absolutely sure - but it is highly likely. LBSCR copyrights would have passed to Southern Railway and then British Railways and lapsed after fifty years. I think it likely that the photograph was published soon after it was taken. The fact the the RCTS did not add any ownership statement next to the picture (as they did with most others) is also an indication that they do not regard the copyright as theirs.--Das48 (talk) 08:20, 28 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Whatever the copyright status, the image would very likely qualify for use under the "fair use" possibility as no examples of this class have survived. The Brill railway station and Richard Beeching pages contain examples of images reproduced under this heading. Lamberhurst (talk) 19:24, 28 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

@ChipmunkRaccoon: It's a primary source. We should only mention things that have been covered by reliable third party sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy.
There are lots of railway preservation societies with schemes like this, few have got anywhere - the economy doesn't have nearly enough spare money for luxuries like new-build steam locos. Until something has been reported by others as actually happening, it remains at best WP:CRYSTALballing and care should be taken when mentioning it, to avoid deletion as a WP:HOAX. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:45, 18 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
