Talk:Kobe Bell

Latest comment: 10 months ago by Roket

The bell was given to Seattle by the City of Kobe in 1962. It was in return for a totem pole or story pole given by Seattle to Kobe, carved by Lummi Nation's Joe Hillaire and given in 1961. The bell was partially funded by money raised by school children in Kobe. It was first rung in front of Kobe City hall by William L. Jacobsen, an exchange teacher in Kobe who normally taught at Ingraham High School. The bell is in a tower made of Japanese cypress designed by Kobe University professor Dr. Shusa Noji. The tower was assembled by Kobe city employee and architect Hatsune Nakagawa after transport on the Yamaharu Maru, arriving in Seattle on March 30, 1962. The roof came separately on the Colorado on April 10, 1962. References: Seattle Times of April 1, 1962 page 13; March 21, 1962 page 1; Roket (talk) 13:27, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
