Issue of ethnicity

Having checked the Hungarian article regarding Zipernowsky's purported Jewish ethnicity, I've found no supporting evidence for this assertion, nor anywhere else (other than a multitude of sites mirroring Wikipedia's entry).

Considering that Hungarian Wikipedia features Károly's burial plaque (sourced from a Wikipedia related site bearing a Christian crucifix on it. I'd suggest that he'd either converted to Christianity, or that his family didn't need to convert in the first instance. I'm not certain of how the assertion came about in the first instance other than the fact that his mother's maiden name was Franziska Fischer, which would be an indication of nothing in particular considering that this was during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The surname 'Zipernowsky' is equally unedifying.

I've found only one source via google books ("The Physical Tourist: A Science Guide for the Traveler", however it asserts that Farkasréti Cemetery is also known as Farkasréti Jewish Cemetery, and that his 'grave' is there. This contradicts the information given regarding the plaque which states that his ashes are interred there (presumably behind that plaque with a crucifix, which is affixed to a wall and follows the convention of ashes being placed in a niche in a brick wall). How reliable, then, is "The Physical Tourist"?

Under the circumstances, I'm being bold and removing Category:Hungarian people of Jewish descent until WP:RS is provided. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 04:46, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Wasn't Zipernowsky of Austrian/German ethnicity anyway? His name was given as "Charles" upon birth. Does anyone know the origins of the name Zipernowsky to confirm if it is heavily Jewish or not? Bulldog123

Jewish naming conventions don't follow the European model, therefore it became commonplace to adopt a European surname (dependent on the region they settled in). They could be Germanic, Hungarian, Central or Eastern Slavic. The fact that particular names may have been more commonly adopted does not automatically mean that the name signifies that the individual is of Jewish ancestry. Zipernowsky would indicate that it is of Polish/Galician origin, but that offers no clue as to how far back the name was adopted if he were of Jewish ancestry. The only method to establish any Jewish ethnicity is to find RS that can trace his lineage. Without such documentation, it is purely speculative. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 06:25, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
