Birth date edit

Morgan was born December 3, 1931 as many online sources show. What exactly constitutes a RS for birth dates? Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 18:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's a good question, Maineartists. Many websites that give dates of birth have user-generated content, which eliminates them. WP:USERGENERATED lists Ancestry.com, Facebook, Fandom, Find a Grave, Goodreads, IMDb, Instagram, ODMP, Reddit, TikTok, Tumblr, TV Tropes, Twitter, and Wikipedia as examples from that category. Self-published sites (such as blogs) are also not acceptable. WP:RSSELF has comments about those.
When an article is about a living person, such as Jaye P. Morgan, additional concerns apply. WP:BLPPRIVACY goes into some detail about avoiding use of primary sources. That eliminates use of state birth indexes and other sources that rely on birth certificates.
After those comments about unacceptable sources, you might want to look at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources for a mix of good and bad sources. Also, WP:RELIABLE gives guidance for evaluating sources with regard to their reliability. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:39, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
