Table Format

Would it be worth changing the format of this prize to be more similar to the Booker Prize winners page, with a more readable table of nominees and winners? Cselkcess (talk) 10:59, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

@Cselkcess: I think it'd be a good idea! Do you think we should have the readable nominee/winner table in this article itself, or make a new List, like what the Booker Prize has? The only thing is that the Booker Prize article has a lot more other information, but removing the nominees from this page would make it really short. ⇒ Lucie Person (talk|contribs) 16:32, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Considering the International Booker doesn't go back as far, I think that having everything on the single page wouldn't be too much.

That said, just in mocking it up, trying things out, it is looking a bit chunkier than the Booker version just because there's more information- a translator, country of origin, English and original title- so I'm not 100% on the ideal formatting. Cselkcess (talk) 16:50, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

I went ahead and made the move to tables and I think it looks good in the main. Still a few things to do and a few open questions, though, which I'll try to get round to: should language be included in the tables? Should we provide links to non-English articles? Audit the hyperlinks to just the first occurrence; standardize column widths. Cselkcess (talk) 17:29, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

@Cselkcess I just saw an email announcing the shortlist, came here, and found you were ahead of me! Thanks for all your work on this.

I wonder if we could make it even more useful? At present we have a separate table for each year, sortable by each column, though authors and translators sort by first name rather than surname, and "The Details" sorts under "The" not "D".

I wonder if it would be more useful to amalgamate the tables, either into just one or, perhaps, one for each decade, so that we can sort and see things like: Which authors have been listed multiple times? Which nationalities get more listings over a decade? Which publishers ditto?

There are easy ways to arrange for the elements in a table to sort better - see Wainwright Prize for a table which offers more sortability. {{sortname|Robert|Macfarlane|Robert Macfarlane (writer)}} displays his name, links to his disambiguated version (to choose a complicated example!), and sorts on his surname, and ''{{sort|Old Ways |The Old Ways}}'' displays his book title but sorts it under O not T.

And I agree that a column for "Original language" would be a useful addition, as it's a prize for translated works. And, now that I read it more carefully, one table for up to 2015 and one, or a decade at a time, for 2016 onwards, would make sense as the nature of the prize changed then. I see that List of winners and nominated authors of the Booker Prize has a multi-year table but, although sortable, doesn't use either of the formulae above to make sure the items sort in the expected order. I might have a go at that some time, if I've got a big chunk of time to spare! PamD 15:14, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

Those sound like great ideas, you have my full support. My one concern is having too many columns and it looking too cluttered. I've been sort of happy to use country as a proxy for language, with the original title, for example, despite it being imperfect.

Looking at the Booker Prize list of winners and nominated authors, there's also a separate page for each year with sundry information, which the international prize doesn't have, and I'd question whether that would be appropriate for a prize that receives less attention. The question then is, if everything is concatenated into one large table, what happens to year-specific information? Maybe a separate section highlighting firsts and interesting observations? I also quite like having the associated dates, but then that returns to the question of clutter.

The Booker Prize page also adds a section at the end with multiple nominations and wins, which would also be an idea to see the bigger picture.

Anyway, a lot to think about, but I'm really interested to see what you can come up with- I might have a think myself too! Cselkcess (talk) 17:31, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
