Star Wars: TOR?

There hasn't been any press release saying that Star Wars: The Old Republic is using HeroEngine. The Gamesutra announcement says that Bioware licensed for an unnamed MMO project, but it may not be this one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.87.246.226 (talk) 21:53, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

COI

It seems that users User:Caspivey, User:Elonka, User:sdshaver who have all made significant additions to this article all identify as having a connection with this software or the company. This looks bad. 212.183.140.2 (talk) 21:28, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

This is not the way Wikipedia works. We write articles from material "attributable to a reliable, published source appropriate for the content in question", not from personal exoerience. Of the three editors I mention, Caspivey says "I work in the Hero Engine", Elonka identifies as Elonka Dunin, an employee of Simutronics, and Sdshaver, who started the article in 2006, identifies as a former employee of Simutronics. 212.183.140.7 (talk) 06:36, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

I will soon be verifying that all this data is valid by checking the sources, I also am starting to use this software (well the Free HeroCloud version anyways) as I am starting to develop my own games. I have just done some more research on these people and being a former employee does not mean that the person is still affiliated. The company they currently work for has no links with the former company which no longer develops HeroEngine. You seem to be deleting parts of the article by stating that the information is 'promotional'. Neither User:Elonka or User:sdshaver are currently working on the HeroEngine project, and sdshaver is not even employed by Simultronics. You must remember that Simultronics no longer owns the rights to HeroEngine, and that since these users are still making positive contributions, that they are able to avoid any conflict of interest.

Third point to make, you are absolutely right when you say that User:Caspivey works in HeroEngine. He develops games in it. He has never worked on the development of the engine. I have spoken to him and he has agreed to write in the third person more often. In addition, User:sdshaver has been inactive on this Wikipedia for over two years. (posting at Akjar13's request) Akjar13 seems to have it right. I (Elonka) do work at Simutronics, and have worked on HeroEngine in the past. However, that division was sold over a year ago, and I no longer work on that project. As far as this Wikipedia article goes, to be honest, I have been a bit horrified by the promotional stuff that's been going in, but have been trying to keep my own edits fairly limited. A full list of the changes I have made to this article: I added refs,[2] updated one entry when a game's title was announced,[3] made one major article overhaul in 2008 where I removed unsourced information,[4] restored sourced information that was removed by someone else,[5] and updated the infobox to include a mention of the company that originally created the product.[6] I'll freely admit that I have a potential COI, but I don't believe I have made any inappropriate edits, so I would appreciate if good faith could be assumed on my part. I am fully in support of removing unsourced information and anything that is blatantly promotional. --Elonka 15:03, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Just adding a link to your own game, is spam of course, as Caspivey did at [7] adding in a link to his game along with other information. I removed it and anything else that didn't have coverage, or enough work on their website to show this was a real game, and not just a guy with a single picture saying he was going to make a game one day. I think the point I was mostly was trying to make is lets sit and argue on rather something is fact or blatant advertising rather then getting on about who is associated with what. A lot of features of the engine was removed because 3 people posted them. If someone posts it is the greatest thing since sliced bread, yes we have a problem, if someone posts that they offer Umbra DPVS it shouldn't matter if an employee posted the information as it is a factual statement about the product. Sdshaver and Elonka both added material to this article while they were employed by Simutronics and before Simutronics sold the product. Elonka's most recent addition [9] was to emphasise the association by adding the name of her employer to the infobox. Since Simutonics developed this product, and are still associated with it, not least in this very article, their reputation and business can be affected by what this article says. It would probably be a good idea for anyone linked to Simutronics to confine themselves to suggesting additions to the article on the talk page and letting other independent editors make them. 212.183.140.1 (talk) 06:30, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

I have made no accusations of bad faith -- I have merely recited public facts and suggested avoiding the appearance of conflict of interest by following advice at WP:COI. What games are listed

• I see no reason to list any game that hasn't gotten any coverage at all, ever. They gave out hundreds of free licenses to anyone who signed up for them, so all of those people are technically working on a game. Are most of them likely to ever finish? Antresnia has a link to their website with one picture and no information at all. The Repopulation has a lot of work done, but then again they've been working on the game for years now through various engines, so may have just imported their existing artwork, and nothing else. Tikal Online has a few simple screenshots and nothing else. Some games listed don't even have their own websites. I'm removing some of them now. Dream Focus 09:37, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

You do have a good point here, although the main idea of this article is to give people an encyclopediac explanation of what HeroEngine is. The games made in it are mainly to help with notability, if a game isn't notable to have an article of its own, then it need not be listed here. The SWTOR game is enough to guarantee that this page will remain, we now need to focus on making sure that there is good detail that is unbiased here. Akjar13 (talk) 12:31, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Mostly concur (noting that I worked on HeroEngine a few years ago, but am no longer on that team). Though I'm not sure it's necessary that a game have a Wikipedia article of its own before it can be listed here, but it should definitely have some sort of third-party reliable source which affirms notability. So just because a game "Doodad Adventures" has its own site and says it's using HeroEngine, doesn't mean it should be listed. But if there were third-party sources talking about the upcoming Doodad Adventures game, and how it was being powered by HeroEngine (or HeroCloud), that might be okay, even if Doodad Adventures didn't have its own Wikipedia article. --Elonka 14:47, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Removing Origins as they switched engines to BigWorld(I used to work on that project, they announced on their site they switched, and I confirmed it in person with the Project Manager for HeroEngine at GDC). Whoever added this... please do not make additions to Wikipedia like this. It is indeed an encyclopedia. Regarding - Games developed using HeroEngine

Currently it lists ESO as being developed using HeroEngine. This is probably just a question of semantics, but my understanding is that it was initially prototyped using HeroEngine but released with their own in-house engine. Defunct developer?

The HeroEngine website is offline, and reportedly has been offline since at least April.[10]
