Land of Oz

It's my understanding that the Land of Oz nights were held at Heaven. This club night was very important in the early history of ambient house music; The Orb were born from these sessions and The KLF's Chill Out album has its roots there (named the 5th greatest "dance" music album of all time by Mixmag).

As such, it would be great (if not essential) if this article had a section on that club night. Can anyone help? --kingboyk 13:21, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

According to the Paul Oakenfold article, "Land of Oz" was the successor to "Spectrum" but no source is cited. I also note that Oakenfold did a "Land of Oz" remix for the Shamen of their track "Move Any Mountain/Pro›gen" in 1990. --kingboyk (talk) 15:42, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Talking Heads reference

The claim that David Byrne referenced the club as the inspiration behind the song of the same name needs referencing - highly implausible to my ear! 80.189.142.131 09:29, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

According to the article, the club opened in December 1979 - that album was released in August 1979.--Tuzapicabit (talk) 23:09, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

I agree that the Talking Heads reference is very unlikely, as the album was released before the opening of the club, and the songs certainly were written at an even earlier time.. Besides, David Byrne is being quoted saying the song was about a gay nightclub owned by Richard Branson, not Norman. Branson was involved in the project only since the early 80ies, or 1993, depending on the sources. --Tb921931 (talk) 19:31, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Suggested correction and amendments

I think the date of 1993 for Virgin buying the club from Jeremy Norman is out by at least 10 years. Virgin (or at least, Richard Branson via a holding company) owned the club from the early 1980s. It may be the case that Branson sold it to Virgin (with which he was obviously connected) in 1993 before they in turn sold it to the Pure Group.

Advert tag

I've tagged the article, specifically the section on current weekly events, with an advert tag because of the lack of multiple reliable third party sources that show this kind of day-by-day breakdown rises to the notability for an encyclopedia. Self-references, either to the club's website or that of the DJs/sponsoring label, don't do it. Let's face it, nearly every good club has a weekly schedule[1][2][3] and Wikipedia isn't the place to highlight them. Pairadox (talk) 00:58, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I've cleaned it up and find no problem ascribing a whole sentence to each night as it is a huge nightclub and each club at the venue has to draw its own crowd. One of the refs I was reading even discuss ed that they tried to introduce gay vs. strait nights with little success as the everyone kept coming to whatever night they wished. Not entirely, because I don't think that directories of attractions/calendars of events meet the standards of reliable independent sources (in many cases the copy for them is provided by the clubs themselves or is unverified hype), but enough that I won't re-add the tag. advert tag / reapsorption of information

I changed the night-summary back to the critique version. The current one was too much like an advert and was certainly not ecyclopaedic. A brief summary of each individual night is important, but it's not important to list all the DJ's and use hype words.

The trivia section is also quite important, as it partly justifies the existence of an encyclopaedic entry of Heaven Nightclub in terms of its importance to popular culture. This was restored.

And I reverted, trivia sections are highly discouraged so I recommend you avoid those at all costs. If something is notable enough to include then do so within the regular text. The current state not targeting each night was to avoid advert-feel. I welcome improvements but reverting to old editions that had be cleaned-up per consensus is unlikely to be met with much success on this article or elsewhere. Benjiboi 03:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

The Wednesday section reads far too much like an advert, and who is Patrick Lilley supposed to be? We need to remember that anybody in the world can read Wikipedia, and it is our responsibility to ensure that nobodies and minor personalities do not receive more attention than they deserve. It would be inappropriate to apply "nobody" or "minor personality" to someone who has had a profile in The Times, something which Jeremy Joseph - for example - has not had. Nick Cooper (talk) 13:07, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
