Photo of tracks in Hilo
editI suggest that the photo of rails descending into Hilo Bay ["Abandoned rails on Hilo Bay (2017)"] be removed from this article, unless their relation to the railroad can be better clarified, because these are not train tracks. This photo actually compelled me to visit this site, wondering what could lead a railroad to construct rails into the ocean. In person it is quite clear that they were not built for trains. The gauge is on the order of 6 feet, their slope is considerably steeper than would be used on a railroad, and the crossmembers would likely be incompatible with flanged wheels. I suspect they served as some sort of lift for cargo or boats. Perhaps this was a part of cargo operations associated with the railroad, and thus the image wouldn't be inappropriate for the article. But as presented today, the photo is misleading, as the provided context and caption suggest that this was part of the railroad's route, which is not the case. I am not a regular Wikipedia contributor and don't feel confident deleting others' work. 47.154.103.165 (talk) 01:21, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
