that is a really unflattering photo; maybe it should be changed? KingOfAfrica (talk) 21:12, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Year of birth edit

To whomever it may concern:

Please do not delete the section regarding the discrepancy over his year of birth. This is not a hoax or a joke. I have a good source which is referenced. I realize it is really hard to believe the guy is 91, but some people have shaved off as many or more years than he during their lifetimes or until they were caught. For example:

  • Jeane Dixon (b. 1904 but claimed 1918 as year of birth successfully her entire professional life)
  • Louis Nye (b. 1913 successfully claimed 1922 until death)
  • Signe Hasso (b. 1910, successfully claimed 1915 until death)
  • Vera-Ellen (b. 1921, successfully claimed 1926 until uncovered decades after death)
  • Kay Medford (b. 1914, successfully claimed 1920)
  • Jayne Meadows-Allen (b. 1920, successfully claimed for a long time to have been born in 1926)
  • Jean Arthur (b. 1900, successfully claimed to have been born in 1905)
  • Minnesota Fats - no one is really sure when he was born - he claimed 1913, but...
  • Zsa Zsa Gabor (b. 1917) - at one point claimed to have been born in 1928
  • Barbara Billingsley (b. 1915) - claimed 1922 until census data proved otherwise
  • John McMartin - no one knows when he was born

Year of birth edit

Maybe the section shouldn't be deleted since there is a discrepancy, but most of the information on Hal Holbrook places a lot of doubt on it. Even a recent (March 2007) AP article on Holbrook (Hal Holbrook honored by Mississippi lawmakers) states his age as 82, not 91.

However, the part about him getting married at age 20 should be removed. Getting married at age 20 was not uncommon in the first half of the 20th century and that should not be added as any evidence that he is 9 years older than he claims to be.

20 VERSUS 29 edit

I wholeheartedly agree with the criticism of the marriage claim: It would have been significantly more likely for an American male to get married at age 20 than at age 29 in 1945! Although war service delayed many young men from getting married from early 1942 through mid- to late-1945, Mr. Holbrook would have been nearly 26 years old at the time of Pearl Harbor-- an age by which most American males of the era would have been married and fathers already. When the war ended, of course, marriage was practically an expectation of the young men being discharged in droves from the armed forces, first in Europe, and then the Pacific. As for the overall claim of a 1916 birth for Mr. Holbrook, I find that exceedingly hard to believe!?! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.253.92.220 (talk) 15:29, 13 March 2007 (UTC).Reply

P.S. An Intellius People Search (www.intellius.com) also shows Harold R. Holbrook (with a reference, inter alia, to one Dixie Carter Holbrook) being 82 years of age!

Holbrook's birth date edit

Holbrook's father was born in 1902, making it nearly impossible for Holbrook himself to be born in 1916. It appears to be a mistake made by a single source and unsupported by the rest. Ritto Revolto 18:57, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

According to Holbrook's 2011 autobiography, Harold -- The Boy Who Became Mark Twain, he was born in 1927 (on February 17). 2600:8800:784:8F00:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 08:13, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Personal life edit

Wow- NOTHING about Dixie Carter or his other family except in an infobox? Surely we can do better than that. 206.218.218.49 (talk) 16:05, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can we add the cropped version image of Holbrook at the Emmys? Here's the version -> [1] --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 06:47, 31 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Legend of the Three Trees edit

Hal Holbrook also had a voice role as narrator in the 2001 children's animated film "The Legend of the Three Trees": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0376723/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Downwiththesyndrome (talkcontribs) 04:12, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

"Notoriety"? edit

The choice of the word "notoriety" here seems odd:

Holbrook initially gained notoriety for a one-man stage show he developed while in college in 1954, performing as Mark Twain.[1][2][3]

Usually "notoriety" implies a negative thing. I can't see why that is used here. NotYourFathersOldsmobile (talk) 04:29, 4 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Possible reassessment edit

Is there a way for Holbrook to undergo a reassessment because I feel that his contributions as Twain with his award wins and nominations along with a National Humanities Medal bestowed by a U.S. President, should at list push him to a "Mid-Importance" on Actors and filmmakers or even place him on the comedy portal? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 08:55, 12 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

"Years active" edit

In the Infobox, the "Years active" line has a begin/start year of 1954. Yet according to Holbrook's 2011 autobiography (Harold -- The Boy Who Became Mark Twain), he and his first wife toured the country playing everything from elementary schools to professional theaters beginning around 1948, nearly a full six years before the "1954" in the Infobox.

Granted this was stage work; it was still acting.

Therefore, I think the "1954" should be changed to "1948."

Thoughts, anyone? 2600:8800:784:8F00:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 08:24, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
