I'm posting this to the talk page to record the discussion of a typo matter pointed out by Acad Ronin. While browsing through articles with typos, it hit upon this article. Twice in the same session I changed the 'Hongkong' to 'Hong Kong'. Upon being notified by Acad Ronin, I thought I was incorrect and made a invis text tag and began taking steps to make sure this false positive could be permanently corrected. However, the correct term is 'Hong Kong' as is listed on the official website of the bank itself. [1] It states, "HSBC Bank Egypt was established in 1982 as Hong Kong Egyptian Bank." It appears that 'Hongkong' is incorrect and is not the official name of the bank, as the 'Hong Kong' also shows up on other tourism related websites such as this. [2] The official name takes precedence and it appears 'Hong Kong' is correct. I believe the source of this matter came up because of the parent company The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in relation to HSBC. Because of this, I believe changing it back to the official 'Hong Kong' is proper as it that is the official and original name of the HSBC Bank. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 00:41, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the problem is that the people in Egypt who prepared the local website don't know their own history. HSBC's 40-page booklet, available on its website, of the history of the group, prepared by its archivists, states quite clearly on p.24 that in 1982, HSBC established Hongkong Bank of Egypt. There are also many contemporaneous bank directories, including the Bankers Almanac, that use that style. The history booklet also mentions that the Canadian subsidiary, established in 1981, was Hongkong Bank of Canada. See also HongkongBank of Australia (1985), Hongkong Bank Malayasia Berhad (1987), and the like. Still today, when the bank uses its original name, it gives it as Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Corporation. Note, the acronym is HSBC, not HKSBC. Acad Ronin (talk) 02:38, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
