Urban legend?

edit

According to Jerry Cowley TD at http://debates.oireachtas.ie/DDebate.aspx?F=TRJ20060208.xml&Ex=All&Page=4

It subsequently transpired — I stand open to correction on this by the Senator — that such a person never existed because it was enough that people believed in the threat. However, as with penalty points, which caused individuals to behave when they were first introduced, perhaps people only believed in the glimmer man for a time.

Anyone got anything on this proposition? Albatross2147 (talk) 13:41, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Memory might be playing tricks, but I seem to recall an interview on RTÉ radio years ago with a former 'Glimmerman', or it may just have been a Paddy Crosbie anecdote. Point above about 'policing' efficacy being largely in perception is well taken. RashersTierney (talk) 11:15, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Company officials fining people.

I have deleted the claim that the "glimmerman" could fine people for using gas out of the prescribed hours. Fines in Ireland, as in most other countries, can only be imposed by courts of law.
