Sisters' dowries edit

I've removed the line "He bought his first bicycle with money handed down from his sisters' dowries.[1]".

A dowry is money that a woman pays her husband's family. So is brothers may have had dowries to hand down but the sisters would't. 66.55.209.223 (talk) 20:29, 12 June 2010 (UTC)les woodlandReply

Death edit

this section could flow better. it starts oddly enough by mentioning the age at which he gives up cycling, and then goes on to mention a bypass operation and dying of a heart attack. after reading this section one is left with the impression that he didn't live much past 40. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.125.85.33 (talk) 20:18, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

A good account of his secret wartime work, and background, from the BBC Gino Bartali: How a cyclist's key work saved lives. - 112.119.221.3 (talk) 22:31, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Saving lives during Nazi occupation? edit

Bartali's efforts to save Jewish lives are contested, as John Foot, historian of Italian cycling, writes in a blog post for London Review of Books, San Gino. Al69dente (talk) 13:02, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

As documentaries etc. are made on this story, it should be mentioned that this is controversial. Included this in the article with some additional references in as neutral a way possible.. 2A02:1810:2D1B:7200:E93F:236:7C4B:4F25 (talk) 08:46, 1 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
