Earlier Irish phone tapping scandal edit

Just a note to say I've opened a discussion on this article's talk page about whether or not to move the article now we have this one. Please feel free to add any thoughts there. Thanks, Paul MacDermott (talk) 14:56, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Assessment edit

As per my post and reassessment on the talk page of Irish phone tapping scandal, there is no way this compares in importance in the overall Ireland project as "Top", even mid is pushing it, especially when you look at the topics of the other Top Irish articles here. ww2censor (talk) 15:32, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Replied on the other phone tapping article. Paul MacDermott (talk) 16:18, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

GSOC bugging scandal earlier in the year edit

The GSOC bugging scandal has been mentioned in the GSOC article as a subsection, do people feel some mention or link to it should be made in the "Background" section of this article? Whether or not it turns out to be related to this, it's certainly part of the timeline of events leading up to the embattlement of Shatter and Callinan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnSmith7585 (talkcontribs) 06:23, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Rename edit

I suggest moving this to 2014 Garda phone recordings controversy.

The extent to which the events behind the revelations constitute a scandal as opposed to a mere "controversy" remains to be established and it is not appropriate for Wikipedia to pass judgment prematurely.

The Irish media are using the word "recording" rather than "tapping". Telephone tapping is:

Telephone tapping (also wire tapping or wiretapping in American English) is the monitoring of telephone and Internet conversations by a third party, often by covert means.

The phones were monitored with the co-operation of the owner of the phone, and often with the knowledge of the person at the Garda end of the line, though not the person at the other end. jnestorius(talk) 18:41, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Actually a casual Google search throws up lots of sources using "scandal" and "bugging" Guardian Mirror Independent Herald
A slightly less casual Google News search gives the following:
Search terms Garda scandal Garda controversy Garda tapping Garda recording
Count 73 'About 2,960' 25 'About 1,910'

  • Support moving to 2014 Garda phone recordings controversy. Possibly we could dispense with the 2014 as I believe years are only used to differentiate between similar controversies, but I'm happy with either. Paul MacDermott (talk) 12:01, 28 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

WP:BOLD moved. jnestorius(talk) 15:54, 30 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

2014 Garda phone recordings controversyGarda telephone calls controversy – Shorter, snappier title. There seems to have been no similar controversies in previous years. The article refers to a controversy that goes back to the 1980s so the year in the title is unnecessary. --Relisted. • Support - Removing the 2014 seems reasonable considering Wikipedia:Unnecessary disambiguation. NickCT (talk) 12:25, 21 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. I closed this as moved but changed my mind. I agree we should do away with the "2014" but I can't see any reason why we should change from "phone recordings" to "telephone calls". As shown in the section above "phone recordings" seems to be the common term in reliable sources. I'd be happy with a move to Garda phone recordings controversy.
