Francisco del Ponte" (an Italianized version of his name) That's incorrect. The name is Francesco del Ponte but the italianized version of his name of VDB would be Francesco del Pantalone—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.5.79.104 (talk) 12:32, October 10, 2006

I've modified the "del Ponte" comment. You should remember to sign your posts though. --Armchair ninja 13:47, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
That is an utter lie. Del Ponte is the correct italianisation. Leptictidium (mammal talk!) 23:16, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
In fact it's not a lie because it all depends on how you interpret Vandebroucke's name. "Van de" ("van den" in pre-reform spelling) means "of the" or "from the". There's no word "broucke" in Dutch that I know of but, given that the "n" of Dutch plurals is often dropped in speech, "broucke" sounds like both "bruggen" (bridges) and "broeken" (trousers). "Trousers" is just about possible because the Dutch - Belgium was part of Holland at the time - were the last people in Europe to have surnames. It was Napoleon who insisted they did and the Dutch, thinking neither he or surnames would be around for long, often gave themselves silly names that a Frenchman wouldn't understand. Or names like Jan Janssen (John son of John) that ridiculed the idea another way. The fact that "broeken" could have been corrupted to "broucke" is quite reasonable given the illiteracy of earlier generations and the suppression of Dutch as a language when Belgium separated from Holland. If Vandenbroucke translated his name as Bridges, it shows which version he, not unreasonably, prefers! Les woodland (talk) 09:06, 4 January 2009 (UTC)les woodlandReply

Actually, the "broucke" in Vandenbroucke's name comes from the dutch word "broek" that means "marsh" or "morass" or "swamp". Also see the origin of the city name Brussels ("Broeksel"). So a correct translation of his family name would have been something like "dalla Palude". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.134.162.141 (talk) 16:55, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sources edit

I have removed a source from cycling4all.com as per WP:RS. cycling4all is an interesting website to read and it is clear the editor/writer puts in a lot of time. However, as there is no editorial oversight and is itself a collection of news, doesn't really qualify as a reliable source. Moreover, if a source is noted there, then it will have been noted by a reliable news source first elsewhere. --Mk3severo 22:39, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, you are all dead wrong about the etymology of the word 'Broucke'. Broucke or Broecke refers to a "broek" or "brouck", which is an old Southern Dutch word for a swampy area, muddy soil containing a lot of water, usually on top of an underground clay layer. "Brussels", for instance, used to be called Broecksele in ancient Dutch, which means city built in a swampy area. A 'brook' in English refers to water by the way. Therefore, the name has surely nothing to do with trousers or bridges or mocking names, that's for sure. How do I know ? Because as a Belgian I've have done some linguistic research about my own surname, which is 'Vanopbroecke' :-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.23.254.209 (talk) 22:07, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
