Fort Lancaster often contends that it was the only Fort in Texas attacked by native American Indians. I have seen this statement in advertisements and other Texas information sites. However, this was the only for that I know of in Texas that were attacked by the Kickappoo and the Compancheros. Much earlier during the century, Fort Parker was actually attacked and by the Comanches tribes. The Comanches had several different tribes. Fort Parker was attacked on May 36, 1836. The Fort was near present day Waco. The raiding party not only got into the fortress, but they also captured five individuals including Two of the Parker children. The nine year old girl's name was Cynthia Ann Parker. She eventually married one of the Cherokee chiefs and had three children one of who was named Quannah (who later took the later name of his mother's white family so it was changed to Quannah Parker. Cynthia Ann married a Comanche chief by the name of Peta Nacona. Twenty four years after the massacre at Fort Parker, Sul Ross and some rangers were able to find Cynthia Ann at a battle often referred to as the Peace River battle. There are several sources that substantiate the need for the presence of the US military and the Texas Rangers in this area. The fact that Robert E Lee was assigned for awhile near the Cooper Camp (not too far from Fort Griffin) to help control the Commanche raiding party is one such proof.
