Bantustans

edit

I think it's a good idea to add the flags of bantustans to this article

Any objections?? Damërung ...ÏìíÏ..._ΞΞΞ_ . -- 13:58, 17 June 2007 (UTC-5)

Since 1994, the "bantustans" have no significance. If there is a case for providing flags of sub-national regions, these should be provided for all African countries, not just South Africa, and they should be of current provincial entities, not those which have been disbanded. The page does not list other redundant flags. Kevin McE 17:36, 15 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I see that this conversation took place a few years ago, but having just looked at this page now, I was very surprised to see the flags of Bantustans. These were not recognized as countries by the vast majority of the world even during apartheid, and they have indisputably not been national flags since 1994. I suggest removing them. Any objections? Having received no objections to my comments nine and a half months ago, I am inclined to delete the Bantustan flags. But as it's been a while since I raised the point and I recognize that others may have concerns, for now I've moved them to the "former states" category. I feel that this is still problematic, as they were never recognized as states by any government outside of South Africa. Please share comments on this edit or the full removal of these flags from this page. Mgllama (talk) 19:20, 4 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Former flags of Africa?

edit

Why not a section for the former flags of Africa? Such as the Republic of Maryland? 4.255.55.13 (talk) 17:54, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed African Flags

edit

Since Africa as a continent is missing a flag, I think people should design one for any use whatsoever. There are already some proposed flags, some of which appear on wikicommons. I think this may attract people to "participate" on this "contest" to create a flag for Africa. This designs should be copyright free, and should have include no obscenity at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Remi1771 (talkcontribs) 23:28, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Non-free image use

edit

I believe that File:African_Union_flag.svg has a justified fair use case for non-free content that applies in the context of Flags of Africa, and exemption should be considered to allow it on this page. Most of WP:NFCC is addressed in the file's page, but part 8, "Contextual significance", and 9, "Restrictions on location" would appear to need to be addressed in the context of this page. Regarding contextual significance, the image of this flag is needed in the article list of flags so that readers can easily identify the flag's article based upon the appearance of the flag. Regarding restrictions on location that would prevent its usage in a non-article context, WP:NFT allows for exceptions on a case-by-case basis. 184.57.53.25 (talk) 17:50, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

The file is being used in African Union and Flag of the African Union, so I really don't think the kind of decorative use your proposing can be justified for this article per No. 6 of WP:NFC#UUI as well as WP:NFCCP. For reference, WP:NFCC#9 is not relevant here because this list article is in the article namespace which is all NFCC#9 requires. The issue is that entire article is basically a huge image gallery of flag images and there is no sourced contextual discussion of any of these flags at all, so there's no reason for the non-free image to be included at all and its markup could be removed without being detrimental to the reader's understanding in any way per WP:NFCC#8. As for WP:NFG (I think you meant to type that instead of WP:NFT), there community consensus has typically been that "Completeness" is not really an accepted justification for non-free use and most of these types of articles are actually "incomplete" when it comes to image files. Once again, unless your planning on adding specific sourced content related to discussing this particular file within this particular article, which would mean a complete change in the purpose of this article, it's going to really hard in my opinion to write a valid non-free use rationale for this type of non-free usage.
However, if you really feel non-free use is justified, then the best place to discuss that would probably be WP:FFD since anything decided on this talk page cannot really override an established community policy per WP:CONLEVEL regarding using non-free files in list articles such as this. Bringing this up for discussion at FFD is likely going to get you a quicker response. Another benefit of discussing things at FFD is that it may actually be possible for this image to be considered to be in the public domain depending on a variety of different factors, and editors who regularly participate in FFD tend to be most familiar with the peculiarities of the different types of file licenses. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:03, 19 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Why not the UN?

edit

Hello, the header says intercontinental organizations like the United Nations are omitted, but it includes other Intercontinental organizations like the OPEC or the Arab League. For consistency I'd propose to remove all the intercontinental orgs. Best regards. — J. F. B. (me´n parlar) 09:14, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
