Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology/Tasks
Here are some heraldry and vexillology related things you can do:
|
This page contains a list of open tasks for the Heraldry and Vexillology Wikiproject. If you want to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of heraldry and vexillology, pick a task from the list below. Feel free to add tasks to the appropriate sections, or discuss them on the talk page.
Tasks involving more than one article
editA series of articles about the use of heraldry of different countries, ideally featuring the following points:
- Origins/History
- Usage of arms(by whom? nobility/gentry/towns/corporations/anyone)
- Regulation (uncontrolled/government dept/law/heralds)
- Distinctive Features of that country's heraldry
- Current Usage
Add the template {{Heraldry by country}} at the bottom of the article to produce the following navbox
Click on a red link above to create a new article. Click on a blue link for an existing article, which probably needs improvement. Edit the template to add/remove countries.
Assessment
editThe quality of articles within the scope of the project can now be assessed by adding a class parameter to the {{WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology}} template on an article's talk page, e.g. {{WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology|class=stub}}. Rating articles in this way allows us to see what articles we need to focus on, and tracking the number of articles in different classes over time will gives us a quantitative measure of the improvement in Wikipedia's coverage of heraldry and vexillology. At the moment around 80 articles need to be assessed. See the assessment department for more details.
Officers of Arms in the ODNB
editThe Oxford Dictionary of National Biography contains a large number of biographies of British officers of arms. It would be good if we could get a decent article of each of these heralds. A list can be found here. The ODNB article can obviously be used as a source, see the ODNB website. Most public libraries in the UK and Ireland allow their members to access the ODNB website from home, see here for more information
Improving national flag pages
editIt would be useful to develop recommended guidelines for national flag pages (Flag of ... pages), including improving and promulgating the Template:National flag infobox.
Slovakia Municipality task force
editThe Slovakia City task force has been made to improve the flags of the cities, towns, and municipalities across Slovakia. Participation is encouraged and greatly appreciated!
Tasks involving individual articles
editArticles for creation

- Hans Dietrich Birk
- Johann Siebmacher (currently a redirect)
- Armorial général (of France) (see: Charles-René d'Hozier)
- Heraldic courtoisie (fi:Heraldinen kohteliaisuus)
- Similar flags, list of similar flags, or Similar country flags, to make a complete list of similar pairs, e.g., the following look almost the same, especially in thumbnail size... "thumbnailly ambiguous". Jidanni 00:00, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
- Flag of Lemko-Rusyn Republic I found a link at worldstatesmen.com to an image for the flag. The flag looks plausible to me, but I do not know how to verify the accuracy or how to verify copyright status in order to add the image to the article. The complete link is under (discussion) in the article. Can anyone help? Similarly, need a two color Ukrainian flag for the Komancza Republic article, and verificationPustelnik 23:15, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Articles for improvement

- The Flag of the Collectivity of Saint Martin page doesn't feature the emblem flag (which can be found here: https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/mf.html#emb) and the current unofficial flag on the page is a poor quality .png file.
- The List of flags of the Papacy appears to be entirely original research. --Xavier (talk) 23:59, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
- Armorial of the Communes of Charente needs many descriptions and new arms created.
- Eureka Jack - can someone optimize the footnotes
- United States heraldry
- Roll of arms
- Coats of arms of Africa - just a few missing from this list
- Coat of arms of North Korea, The inscription of Coat of Arms of North Korea should be changed to '조선민주주의인민공화국' from '조선민조주믜인민공희국'.
- Flag protocol - lacks references, needs clarification in many areas, may need to be rewritten almost entirely. It is my sense that this article could be nominated for AfD if not improved.
- The Environmental Science Services Administration article has a photo of a folded and wrinkled ESSA flag, but it would be improvement to have a clean image of the ESSA flag. The flag was in use by a major U.S. Government agency – the predecessor of today's National Oceanic and Atmopsheric Administration – from 1965 to 1970.
- Tincture (heraldry)#Poetic representation — The page as a whole is good, it's just that this section seems like it was cut & pasted from a separate article and never integrated into the text of the whole. Since most of the problems include sourcing statements from heraldic history, I thought I would start here instead of the Guild of Copy Editors -A garbage person (talk) 15:15, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
Images
edit- Le Cateau-Cambrésis arms in question. there are three different blazons that are contradicting, the first is on the image's page description.. --Xavier (talk) 03:53, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

- "Écartelé au 1 et 4 d'or au lion d'azur accompagné de douze besants de gueules disposés en orle et au 2 et 3 de gueules aux deux fasces d'or."--Xavier (talk) 23:43, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

- Done - Had to rage a bit with the masonry, but here you go! It is a base on which to work on for futur creators, if someone is disatisfied Hull19 (talk) 07:16, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
- The image of the flag of the United States Commissioner of Fisheries (see File:Flag of the United States Commissioner of Fisheries.svg) was flagged as a candidate to be copied to Wikimedia Commons long ago, but it never has been copied. Someone who knows how should copy it over.
- Improve the vector version of the Flag of Michigan (see talk) by combining the clarity of the existing version with the details of the machine-vectorized version. (compare with raster version.) HueSurname (talk) 05:33, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
- w:File:Flag of the United States.svg needs color updated. The colors on the current file are based on a late 2000's modification of the white point of RGB values determined via a 1946 Military standard (per Flag_of_the_United_States#Cable_colors_in_CIE). In 2012, the Department of State provided definitive RGB value standards, cited in the main article. Multiple complaints have been made that the current colors render as an inaccurate purple-ish shade on most monitors, and multiple requests have been made to update to the new standard. Those with the power to change it have repeatedly refused. Many of those disputes on the article talk page have been deleted (still available in history). Many remain on the talk page of the Commons file. TheTaraStark (talk) 19:44, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- amend HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh's arms augmented as GCStJ
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh's arms ought to display in chief the GCStJ augmentation of honour, viz. the arms of the Most Venerable Order of St John. It would be fab if an image of these could be created accordingly; the GCVO insignia is optional (herald painter's licence), given that the Royal Victorian Order circlet surrounds the Shield.
Qv. HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh's heraldic banner at the Priory Church of the Order of St John.
NB. - as a guide this is the SMOM augmentation in chief.
- the Most Venerable Order of St John's arms are blazoned:
Gules on a Cross Argent in the first quarter a representation of the Royal Crest of England (upon a Royal Crown Proper a Lion statant guardant Or royally crowned Proper).
Looking forward to hearing from you - many thanks.
Best Primm1234 (talk) 03:46, 17 January 2024 (UTC)- Un grand merci à Ruthven. Primm1234 (talk) 01:39, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
