I nominated this page for deletion, and, upon refreshing my screen, saw that, in the mean time, a tag had been added saying that the article was undergoing a major edit. I'm not sure if leaving the AFD in place is breaking any rules, and if so, it was not intentional on my part, so I am going to let the AFD stand, and an admin or someone could remove it if this was inappropriate. Do not delete

Eskimo, maybe I can be of assistance. I created the article and I have been editing it since yesterday. If you tell me the reason why you want the article deleted, I can improve the article to where it qualifies to be left alone. How can I help?Fsmatovu (talk) 19:04, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

I don't want it deleted. I want it to be up to standard. Using info from the company's website is okay, but should not be the only source of info. I noticed that a Google Finance webpage is also used as a reference. Good information...but it does not address my main concern, by telling me why this company stands apart from any of the thousands of similar companies that have had pages deleted on Wikipedia. In other words, what makes the company notable. Are there any magazine or newspaper articles that talk about the company? Not just announcement or a brief mention...but an actual article written about the company. That would be a good place to start. I didn't find anything myself, which is why I nominated it for deletion...but perhaps you have some other sources of info.

Also, just a piece of advice: If you are somehow involved with, or work for First Rand, adding information to the article is not against the rules per se, but it is strongly discouraged to avoid any conflict of interest. If that is the case, you should probably announce your affiliation on this page, explaining how you are associated with First Rand, just so if it is ever brought up as an issue in the future, people won't be able to say that you weren't honest or upfront about your intentions. Addressing your concerns

Now that you have articulated your concerns, I think they can be effectively addressed. I will continue to work on the article to bring it up to standard. My experience acquired over the last three years tells me that it is not that sources are lacking; but rather it is I who has not yet mastered the art of finding those sources.

Conflict of Interest

Neither I nor my family members have any investment or employment relationship with FirstRand Group or any of its subsidiaries.

Complicated corporate structure

What makes writing an article about this topic is the complicated nomenclature and corporate structure within the group. FirstRand Bank, FirstRand Group, FirstRand Limited and First Rand Limited are all used interchangeably in the literature. Yet the chain of banks that comprise the bulk of FirstRand assets are not called "FirstRand"! The are called First National Bank (South Africa) or FNB Zambia or some other County Name. There is even a term called FirstRand Banking Group, which in my opinion clouds the issue even further.

Notability

According to the website of the South African Reserve Bank, FirstRand Bank is the second-largest banking conglomerate in South Africa, with over US$80 billion in assets. Such a large business , I am confident, has has a fair amount of press. I just need to find the links to those articles.Fsmatovu (talk) 23:35, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Title

Why is this article entitled "First Rand" when the entity itself always refers to itself as "FirstRand" (no spaces) as does the article itself? danno_uk 22:19, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
