Name and person info of his wife edit

The sources seem somewhat contradictory on the exact name of his wife:

In conclusion, sources from Switzerland (Hilebrandt, HLS) and some original catalogues would suggest "Witschi-Courant", also German pronounciation would suggest "Witschi" and not "Witchi". However, the first name is still either Marie (Hildebrandt) or Maria (HLS).

Concerning her personal data (birth, death), Choong et al. writes (1841–1921) while the official Nobel biography mentions 1851-1921 while the original sources mention yet again different birth/death years, namely 1850-1925 . This is how far I got with the research. Greetings --hroest 20:33, 6 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Year of dissertation edit

According to the HLS he finished his degree in 1865 and got his doctorate / PhD of "Dr. med" in 1866. This description is more detailed and thus seems more accurate. However according to the nobel prize bio and Choong et al 2009 he got his doctorate in 1865. Maybe those sources confused the degree / licence to practice (Staatsexamen) with the doctoral disseration. Currently, I have both dates in with the different sources. Most other sources except the HLS put the year of dissertation to 1865 and Bonjour 1981 has a lot of material and also the name of the disseration. On the hand, several sources put the dissertation "Behandlung der croupösen Pneumonie mit Veratrum Präparaten" as published 1866 in Wurzburg. Bonjour writes that the dissertation was only available hand written at the time and that Kocher followed Biermer to Zurich to be his assitant which would mean that he already finished his dissertation.--hroest 15:47, 29 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Family tree and relation to biographer Edgar Bonjour edit

According to this, the historian Edgar Bonjour ([1] [2]) was the son-in-law of Kocher: "A monograph on Kocher’s life was written by the well known Swiss historian and son-in-law Edgar Bonjour [1]".

While Bonjour (1898 - 1991) married Dora Kocher (1914-2004), see also [3], Kocher did not have any daughters and the birth date of 1914 makes it more likely that Dora was a grandchild of Theodor Kocher. From this document "Kocher, Dora und Gertrud an ihre Mutter Kocher, Berta (1880-1929)" it seems that Doras mother was Berta.

According to the Burger Katalog, [4] the most likely family constelation was

                              Johannes Witschi-Courant (1808-1872)[5] [merchant] ∞ Maria Elisabeth Courant (1817-1893) [6]

                                           |
Jakob Alexander Kocher (1814-1893) [7] [engineer] ∞ Maria Wermuth (1820-1900) [8]
    | |
    | |
Theodor Kocher (1841-1917) [9] ∞ Maria Witschi (1841 / 1850 - 1921 / 1925) [10]
|
|-- Arthur Otto (1876-19?) [11] [salesman], prob. died between 1925 and 1930
|
|-- (Johann) Albert Kocher (1872-1941) [12] [doctor and lecturer at the university]
|
|-- (Albert) Theodor Kocher (1870-1950) [13] [doctor] ∞ Berta Lauterburg (1880-1929) [14]
    |
    | -- Gertrud Kocher (1909-?) / Kocher, Gertrud Agnes Friederike (1909-195?)
    |
    | -- Dora Kocher (1914-2004) ∞ Edgar Bonjour (1898 - 1991)

while the Nobel biography describes Johann Albert (1872-1941) as "oldest" son who became his fathers assistant [15] he is also the one that is listed as lecturer at the university and thus it is likely that he was the one helping his father but was not the oldest son.--hroest 15:47, 29 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
