I don't know if I'd go as far as saying "destroy the fabric of the universe." That would probably be more applicable to Greg Egan's Schild's Ladder. In the book, the Hive was simply replicating itself and destroying "emerging civilizations" in the process - i.e. ones that had learned/figured-out-by-dumb-luck how to make energy densities high enough to make wormholes.
