- The first ducal holder was Louise de Kérouaille, created Duchess of Aubigny in the Peerage of France in 1684, jointly with her son by King Charles II, the Duke of Richmond and Lennox.
I'm guessing that "by King Charles II" is out of place so the end of the sentence ought to read "jointly with her son the Duke of Richmond and Lennox." But what's this about the king of England creating a title in the peerage of France? —Tamfang (talk) 19:40, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- Apparently it was done by the French as a favor for Charles II. At his request. She was French, after all; the two nations weren't always hostile. DS (talk) 14:36, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
- The "by Charles II" is presumably attached to "her son", not her creation as duchess. He was the father of her son; the boy was her son by the King. This is actually the only interpretation that the comma placement in the sentence allows, but it's not the most intuitive way for the reader to understand it when they come across it in the flow of text. Louis XV died in 1774. Is the given date incorrect, or should the restoration of the title be credited to Louis XVI?
