Talk:Donald Trump in music

Latest comment: 4 years ago by Morganfitzp in topic Earliest mention?

Created article edit

I created this page with the following considerations:

  1. Many lyricists have mentioned Donald Trump as early as the 1980s and 90s, long before his bids for presidency.
  2. These early musical references to Trump are usually in passing, and the songs themselves are actually about something else.
  3. As Trump rose to prominence in the political sphere, many artists have written songs about him but as of this article's creation, these are in the minority of songs that reference Trump.

It is for these reasons that this article is Donald Trump in music and not List of songs about Donald Trump. Although most of the article is in list form as of this writing, it will grow into more than that, and its title reflects that potential for said growth. Merging edit histories edit

We need to merge the edit histories of Donald Trump in music (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) and List of songs about Donald Trump (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) because the article was moved from the former to the latter, but then not moved back correctly, instead being copy/pasted to the former. I'll leave it with the experts to decide how to do this. This is Paul (talk) 13:13, 13 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Try as I might, I couldn't figure out how to do this. Morganfitzp (talk) 13:06, 25 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Merge 30 Days, 50 Songs article edit

Now that both pages include the full list of songs in this project, I don't see a point in having a separate article for this campaign-related event. Comments welcome. — JFG talk 09:24, 3 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Oppose. The main article allows for more space to describe that particular project, just as individual articles about each song can go into more detail about those songs. Morganfitzp (talk) 02:58, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Oppose. The article features a unique set of songs that satirizes Trump. Also, Trump had been parodied before he even announced his campaign for presidency in 2015. Yoshiman6464 (talk) 14:49, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Support - The "satire" project is not at all notable. Better to redirect it to this page. -- Millionsandbillions (talk) 19:06, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
A project involving Dave Eggers, Moby, Franz Ferdinand, Ani DiFranco, R.E.M. and numerous other important artists collaborating to sway the vote in a U.S. presidential election is "not notable"? Morganfitzp (talk) 19:22, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
A group of celebrities getting together to try to influence citizens to vote against the Republican candidate is not exactly uncommon in the recent history of American politics. The project might be notable enough to warrant a mention on this page but it is not notable enough for a stand-alone article. -- Millionsandbillions (talk) 18:45, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
No consensus to delete the separate page, so I removed the full list of songs from this article to avoid needless duplication. — JFG talk 13:51, 29 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Contested deletion edit

This page should not be speedily deleted because this is a noteworthy, relevant, and well-referenced subject. If the speedy deletion request is simply because two editors moved it back and forth at the outset and a couple of things got tangled in the shuffle, then surely some tech-savvy editor can fix that up and we can get on with business. Morganfitzp (talk) 03:03, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you tech-savvy editor for doing just that. Morganfitzp (talk) 15:19, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Needs updating edit

This list is not complete. Many new songs have been released with anti Trump lyrics — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ain515 (talkcontribs) 05:22, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Like what? List them here. Bonus points for adding a link to a news story that mentions each one. Morganfitzp (talk) 23:27, 4 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please add No Nose Job edit

I have done this for you, Jidanni. Morganfitzp (talk) 23:43, 4 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Earliest mention? edit

Earmarking this here after it was deleted from the page:

  • "Gentrification Skank" by The Connotations (1986): "Attention all properly wealthy and white Americans who believe in laissez faire and the right of an individual to unlimited comforts. New York City has finally been fully gentrified. We can now live in an environment free and clean of filthy societal dregs. We have expelled all members of the inferior races, as well as artists, intellectuals, and other communists. God bless Donald Trump and the American dream!"

The reference was to a Soundcloud post of the song, which isn't usable as a reference, and I couldn't find any news articles or music reviews mentioning the band or this song. I'll also note that it's highly unusual for a band to have been singing about gentrification in the 1980s well before its rampancy in New York. But if this song is credible, it's noteworthy in that it would be the earliest recorded mention of Trump in song, and quite possibly gentrification as well.
