Purpose

edit

Hi, and welcome to this biographical web page about my father, Donald B. Gillies. This was first drafted by myself (Donald W. Gillies) and my mom (Alice E. D. Gillies) in 2005. At the time I wrote a proposal to my mom to enlist her help with this biography, so that it could be an inspiration to other people pursuing mathematical and engineering careers. We specifically were NOT trying to hype or tout my dad's career. We wanted to include both the good and the bad things, and especially his motivations, where possible.

So it's extremely important to me that we include internal motivations for some of the things that my father (and mother) did in their lifetimes. We agreed to this purpose in writing when we embarked on this wikipedia project in 2002. I ran across the agreement recently on the occasion of the my mom's death in October 2012.

If you have any questions or if you are thinking of deleting something from this article - which is so common, unfortunately, given the new and twisted politics of wikipedia - could you please consider contacting me in person before doing so? Thank you, SystemBuilder (talk) 18:02, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Meeting his wife: apocryphal?

edit
Gillies and Mayberry were arch-rivals and best friends, and each competed to finish their PhD degree first. At Princeton Gillies met his future wife, Alice E. Dunkle. When their relationship fizzled, knowing of the rivalry, she threw herself at Mayberry who approached Gillies to ask if he was still dating her. This tactic, used only once, led to their eventual marriage.

Does the poster (129.46.91.222) or someone else have a source? This sounds too much like apocrypha. --Mgreenbe 12:09, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nature

edit
The subsequent report of the ephemeris (orbit) and later publication in the journal Nature helped to dispel some of the fear created by the Sputnik launch by the Soviet Union.

Where is the references for these reports (especially in Nature)? please let me know the exact bibliography. --Masao 06:46, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

UTS Graduation Age

edit
Donald B. Gillies was born in Toronto, Canada and attended the University of Toronto Schools, a laboratory school originally affiliated with the University. Students at this Ontario school skipped a year ahead and so he finished his 13th-grade studies at the age of 18.

Donald Gillies may have graduated at 18, but he would have taken five years to complete grades 9-13 since the first class taking the compressed curriculum graduated in 1973. Completing Ontario Grade 13 at 18 would be expected for anybody born in October. --67.69.108.75 19:03, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is not correct. The information (which came from the his wife) is that UTS in the 1940's compressed 7 years of a academic work in only 6. This is one of the reasons why Gillies settled in Urbana, Illinois, because they had an identical school University Laboratory High School of Urbana, Illinois with many traits similar to UTS.
