Split into Months edit

I am looking for someone who knows what they are doing to create separate pages for each month of 1989, as has already been done for November and December. By the time I finish adding names here, this page will become far too unwieldy. I am happy to take responsibility for changing the formatting to match the other monthly pages, I just don't know how to do the splitting. Braintic (talk) 21:02, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Braintic:, I only just now read your request (repeated in the procedure how to create a 'Deaths in MONTH YEAR'-article). Tip: try 'pinging' someone to alert them, syntax: {{ping|Braintic}}.
To answer your question: I will not do the splitting for two reasons:
1. I've spent the last five year compiling and cleaning up the deaths lists. You can read all about it here (article looks a bit messy since I'm in the process of describing the project). I decided I'm going to improve the lists up to and including the year 2005 (currently at Deaths in December 2003). After that I'll be concentrating on other stuff. I want my life back :)
2. Although I'm impressed with the work you did on Deaths in 1989 the list lacks the level of quality I expect of and apply to a deaths list. Some of the issues I have with your list are for instance: formatting: all entries miss a point at the end, the absence of wiki links in the description part of the entries and the use of very long entry descriptions [1]. These are all points that I stated in the procedure how to create a dpm by the way. Correcting your work will take more of my time than compiling the separate 1989 month lists from scratch.
The most worrysome about the list, however, is that the newly added entries all lack citations stating the actual date of death. This is not acceptable. @Deb:: what's the procedure to follow in this case?
Again, I appreciate the work that you did but I am going to have to pass. Regards Mill 1 (talk) 22:16, 17 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I intend to add citations. But they will take time to compile. I am planning to start collecting them in my next holidays in late April, and start adding them thereafter. "Not acceptable" is somewhat harsh.
The other issues are easily fixed. How long is "too long". Braintic (talk) 02:44, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Braintic I agree 'not acceptable' may sound harsh but chances are that the new split articles will not pass curation if they hardly contain any references.
There are no set rules about when an entry is too long. It is also a matter of personal preference I guess. Just have a look at entries in other deaths lists and you'll get an idea. Good luck and happy editing! Mill 1 (talk) 19:16, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry - it may seem harsh but the rule is that all articles must contain citations and this is particularly true for dates of birth and death. Deb (talk) 15:24, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Braintic: I changed my mind; I will do the split of 1989 shortly :). I'll give you a heads up so you won't loose any work on 1989 in the meantime. Cheers Mill 1 (talk) 08:16, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that! I was actually assuming that if you were to change your mind you would wait until I had added citations. As I said, that will start in a month or so. So let me know whether you want to start splitting now or wait until I have started with the citations. I can start at the end of the year and work backwards if you like.
When I get to adding citations I will probably need to ask for your advice. Braintic (talk) 08:41, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
No need to wait for you to add citations first; I'll process each month separately (starting with Oct. 1989) after which I can add citations from The New York Times automatically using some software. That way the newly created month articles already have some reliable references. After that you could add your citations. First I'll have to write some code to handle the different formatting (of day sections f.i.). I had written code to do just that a few years ago but I seemd to have lost it :/ Mill 1 (talk) 09:46, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Are you going to be able to include the entries that I have at the end of each month for which the day is not known? Braintic (talk) 12:18, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good point. I never include them so they are not present in the month articles regarding the years 1990-2005. It's a matter of preference I guess. I'll include them manually. What do you prefer as section title: 'Date unknown' or 'Unknown date'? Mill 1 (talk) 15:00, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see you've make the choice . I see no difference. Braintic (talk) 22:44, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Notes edit

  1. ^ Example of long entry:
Mustafa Çağatay, 51, Turkish-Cypriot politician, final Prime minister of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus and first Prime minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, traffic accident

Progress of splitting process regarding this article edit

See above topic. In this topic I will post updates regarding the process of splitting up this article which has become too long. I will process the last month first and work my way back. After January has been split to article Deaths in January 1989 Deaths in 1989 will turn into a redirect to Lists of deaths by year.
