There is a sketch plan of the works in

Lowe, James W. (1989) [1975]. British Steam Locomotive Builders. Guild Publishing. p. 627. CN8274.

but it contains errors and other discrepancies. Comparing it with Ordnance Survey six-inch and 25-inch plans of the area, a number of buildings and the large turntable don't fit the rest of the track layout. The plan in Lowe only makes sense if it is rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise - in other words, it has been printed with west at the top. The plan thus rotated then shows the northern side as "Bute Street" and the southern side as "Canal", these two labels should be erased. The Glamorganshire Canal ran along the true western side of the plan, but Bute Street is off the eastern side - the OS 25-inch plan shows that there was housing in between the Works and Bute Street. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:07, 14 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Redrose64: I don't have access to Lowe's book so I can't comment on its diagram. The OS maps you refer to are presumably those at these National Library of Scotland links.[1][2] The six-inch map shows a small dock joined to the canal at the edge of the site. Do you know if this was related to the works?

Incidentally, the NLS side-by-side view drew my eye to an artwork in West Close Square which is similar in size and shape to what is presumably a railway turntable in the 25-inch map, which was only a few yards away. The artwork is shown in File:West Close Square.jpg, and I wonder if it makes a reference to the old turntable. I have looked for sources and have been unable to confirm this.
