Promoting the main table

I have a proposed change to this excellent article, that I expect I will apply. I go to this article frequently - as I expect thousands of people do - for the latest picture, or rather Table of cases by country. But each time I then have to scroll down a bit to see what I consider this article's main raison-d'etre, the said main table. Also, the table is to the right of the screen, and its width is constrained I guess as a result.

An easy solution is to put said table into its own section. Then, with just one click, one can bring that section to the top of the screen, bingo. Moreover, one can refresh the page, without the table slipping again down the screen.

For me it seems a great change, so I assume many others would also be helped if I do this. Do please shout quickly if you have concerns or a better suggestion.

A further idea is to limit the TOC index to continent level, to get to the goodies with less scrolling. Always happy to discuss things and thoughts. Thanks & stay safe, Trafford09 (talk) 10:09, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi, Trafford. While it's clear what you mean, might I suggest that "get to the goodies" is not the best way to refer to information about people's suffering? If you choose to rephrase that point, feel free to delete this comment as well. 92.25.47.124 (talk) 14:14, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi IP. Thank you for making your valid point. You have me bang to rights, as they say. I don't think the project approves of editors altering or deleting text so, whilst regretting my wording, I am leaving the original text. If others spot my error, I hope they will see your comment and my acceptance of fault. Cheers, Trafford09 (talk) 17:46, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

OK, after 9 hours, no immediate rejection of my above proposals, so I've gone ahead and made both changes.
I hope people approve, as it's now better, IMHO.
However, it'd be nice to align the main table to the left, not right.
Who knows a way to achieve that? Trafford09 (talk) 19:08, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Update cases in Israel

The column about Israel is not updated, there are 10 cases now, the latest 2 of them contracted the virus locally. The data can be found in the ministry of health web site in Hebrew. Can someone update the table? I will help with the Hebrew of course, if necessary. PelicanTwo (talk) 16:09, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Map Changes

Recently the world map for the outbreak on the page has changed a few times and it went from useful and simple to chaotic and now to irrelevant. At first, it was very simple with red meaning an infected country and blue being a suspected country, that was simple and there was useful information. You could easily spot newly infected countries and able to see which countries were at risk of the virus. It then turned to a tri-color chaotic scheme which I'm glad was changed, but now we're stuck with an irrelevant map that's complicated to understand and useless. The map that we're stuck with is a map that just shows how many confirmed infected cases there are in every country. That's completely irrelevant. See, I don't care how many cases there are in the country, I can just scroll down and see the number of cases in the box below. And it's hard to understand since you have to match the exact shade of red to the key below to see approximately how many people are infected in the country. It's better to apply this map when most or even all the countries are infected since it's hard now to spot newly infected countries without having to look at the box below. Please can we all just turn the map back to its original state? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Opirentis (talkcontribs) 17:27, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Map of Coronavirus outbreak - wrong colours for French Caribbean territories

Please change the color for the French Caribbean territories to 1-9 or 10-99. The are not over 100 cases in each Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy. It is wrong just to use the same colour as Mainland France. Thanks a lot! --2A02:8108:41C0:4888:A9C2:5A8B:DBC:7F58 (talk) 13:24, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Discussion about template limits

Something needs to be done as the template limits for the page were exceeded on March 1 due to the sheer number of citations. The page either needs to be trimmed down or split. The reflist template shows up as a wikilink now instead of actually showing a list of all the references and it is now impossible to click on references now. Another possibility is to remove or edit Template:2019–20 coronavirus outbreak data/International medical cases. The page is about the outbreak by "country and territory", not by "country and territory" and by "date." I am hoping we can come together to form a consensus as quickly as possible because not having access to the references is un-wikipedia.  Bait30  Talk? 04:35, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

I have removed the large template of daily confirmed cases and deaths and replaced it with a link to the template instead. Reflist and the Navbox are working again. Darylgolden(talk) Ping when replying 06:52, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

About N.Korea?

A lot of case in China, S.Korea, Japan, but nothing from N.Korea.

Question: is this related to the lack of info? N.Korea government has ever released informations about their situation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.11.3.98 (talk) 13:41, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Egypt: ready to split soon

Egypt looks like being somewhat like the Iran case - a country with a limited form of democracy and an authoritarian government where authoritarian rules or the fear of upsetting superiors prevents information from circulating properly. The difference here is that the claim is 20 lab-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases rather than at least 50 COVID-19 deaths in a single city (Qom in Iran a week or so ago). But the transmissions apparently from Egypt to other countries probably indicate much bigger numbers than just 20 lab-confirmed cases.

So it's probably worth splitting off an Egypt article soon - as more info leaks or if WHO decides that Egypt is a priority concern and helps bring test kits and insists that they're used, the lab-confirmed count seems very likely to grow quickly, given the sources we have in the article right now. Cases in French outer territories in Caribbean

Actually, three of the 130 cases registered in France are located in fact in the French outer territories in the Caribbean : 2x in Saint Martin (French side of the island) and 1x in Saint Barthélemy, see here (in French) > [1] : do you think we must distinguish them ? For me, yes. ManuelParis (talk) 12:26, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

References

I would prefer to list them separateley like the case Mainland China – Hong Kong – Macao. It is better to list separately France – Saint Martin – Saint Barthélemy. Otherwise we would have an inconsistence between what is defined as a region or territory. More commons are welcome. --2A02:8108:41C0:4888:A9C2:5A8B:DBC:7F58 (talk) 13:31, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
I think that we should hold a wide discussion on this issue. Another anomaly Faroe Islands is listed under Denmark as a sub-section. I think that this is the best option and we should do the same for other autonomous territories no matter its geography. Even semi-autonomous territories such as Saint Martin should be listed underneath its official nation. As such, Hong Kong should be listed under "China" not "Mainland China". What does everyone else think? JMonkey2006 (talk) 09:25, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

French Guiana is fully part of France and it has 5 Coronavirus confirmed cases

Considering the image on the infobox, there is someone constantly putting French Guiana in gray, considering that it doesn't have coronavirus confirmed cases. This is twice wrong:

  • There are 5 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana. Source: Cinq cas de Coronavirus confirmés en Guyane (France Info).
  • French Guiana is fully part of France, its status is the same as Alaska or Hawaii with the US. It's NOT a semi-autonomous territories like would be Guam or American Samoa. As such, French Guianese cases are counted in the total of confirmed cases in France. There will NEVER be a specific line in WHO situation reports specifying "French Guiana" as a territory or whatever you guys imagine.

I insist on the fact that, just like Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal, the Canary Islands are part of Spain, Alaska and Hawaii are part of the US, France can't be divided and the French regions of Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Reunion and Mayotte should be coloured the same as the rest of the country. Because it's indeed at that scale that confirmed cases in France are counted, both in communications from French official authorities and from UN WHO reports. Strictly speaking, this is related to wiki.commons, not en.wiki, and since you've started a discussion on at wiki.commons, it is perhaps worth trying to keep any discussion in one place: discussion at wiki.commons. I've added a comment over there. 62.107.211.90 (talk) 13:18, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

"Origin" of virus (infobox)

An IP-user changed the place of origin from the virus in many individual articles on outbreak by country (f.i. from 'Italy' to 'Wuhan'), and I sense that it is not how the template is supposed to be used. Could someone please take a look at the edits of this one-issue user? I think information is being corrupted, but I'm not completely sure and will not take further action myself. Thanks, greetings, Eissink (talk) 00:23, 5 March 2020 (UTC).

Another IP'er today does similar edits, changing all origins to Wuhan. Eissink (talk) 14:41, 5 March 2020 (UTC).

Remove Iran Map in Iran Subarticle thingy

The point of the map that is all red now was supposed to show what provinces are affected and what are not. Well, since they are all infected, there isn't really a point of it existing. The one below that is shaded in different colors should be the only map that remains because it at least provides a purpose. StickyKeys (talk) 15:59, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Faroe Islands/Denmark

I think the list should reflect that the number from Denmark includes as of now one case in the Faroe Islands, and potentially also might include cases in Greenland. Either by adding the Faroese flag besides the Danish one, or by adding a note. In the "Outbreak by country and territory" - would it not be of relevance to create a additonal column that relates number of confirmed cases to country population. Origin and Arrival in infoboxes by country

For the 2020 coronavirus outbreak in the Netherlands infobox I have proposed an additional information for the infobox. Some editors insert Wuhan, China on every 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak by country and territory, and some want to put as an origin the source for the first local cases. For Poland it was Germany, for Netherlands it was Lombardy, Italy and so on. So currently under Origin in Netherlands we have both: Wuhan, China (globally) and Lombardy, Italy (first local cases). This can alleviate unnecessary edit warring between editors for this spot and give readers more clue as to the local transfer of infecion and it's global origin at the same time. Maybe there could be additional parameter in infobox Arrival for outside source. YBSOne (talk) 11:19, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Such on page maths seems technically impossible or impractical. Sun Creator(talk) 19:54, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
I think what you are looking for is a column of ratios and per capita rates to allow for some context. It is a good idea because it is needed to illustrate relative success rates. What you seem to be looking for are: death rate (deaths/cases), Recovery rate (recoveries/cases), infection rate (cases/country population). Jeffery Thomas 18:46, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

It's a largely meaningless ratio as long as the outbreak is ongoing. --mfb (talk) 23:17, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

We should split semi-autonomous territories from their parent countries in the table (for easier consistency in numbers, & the safety of readers)

Raising the issue (as some users express wanting to do before) that I think we should split the semi-autonomous territories from their parent countries in the table (e.g. listing French Guiana, Martinique, etc. separately from France; listing Faroe Islands separately from Denmark, etc.).

  1. It would make for clearer standards on what we do and don't split – as Jersey, Guernsey, Hong Kong, and Macao are already separate (due to their status, I think). We would have a much clearer rule of where the line is drawn.
  2. Additionally, it would make the numbers consistent with the reliable sources that do list them separately – both in the total number of territories and in the cases within those countries. We wouldn't need to worry about double-counting or accidentally forgetting to add them to the numbers. A lot of confusion has arisen (from both editors and readers) on why our numbers are off from sources like the JHmap (the source we use as our reference), or whether we've either double-counted or forgotten to count those territories.
  3. Some of these territories are in completely different continents and geographic locations as their parent countries. (French Guiana is practically on the opposite side of the world from France!) It's harder to paint the metaphorical geographic picture of where the outbreak is spreading fastest when numbers are lumped in with the parts of the country on the other side of the globe.
  4. There are people all around the world reading, checking, and updating the main page of 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak every single day. In lumping the territories with their parent countries, a user in one of those territories might not realize the severity of the outbreak within their home territory if they assume the numbers are all from the mainland, OR in the opposite case might think the outbreak has already reached their territory when it hasn't, etc. I'm not doing a great job of explaining, but you know what I mean.

I'd argue that it would be much clearer for people to see where the outbreak is actually spreading or not spreading if we're not combining the territories that reside thousands of miles away with their parent country. Thoughts? Paintspot Infez (talk) 17:31, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Why don't we just have the territories as subrows of their parent country? Group Macao and Hong Kong with China, Guernsey and Jersey with UK, etc. while still displaying their individual counts plus the total. (JoelleJay (talk) 03:38, 12 March 2020 (UTC))

Sort order of the by country and territory table

Should the Pandemic by country and territory table be sorted by deaths instead of cases? Given the under-reporting of cases it seems to me that the figures for deaths are likely to be (a) more indicative of the extent of the outbreak, and (b) more indicative of the impact? For the same reasons, should the deaths column come before the cases column? Batternut (talk) 06:10, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Deaths are a delayed measure of the outbreak, but with the large difference in test coverage it might be better to use that, yes. Downside: At the level of 0-2 deaths it's a largely random sorting. --mfb (talk) 06:19, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
I'd use the number of cases as the second sort key, though not sure if the table supports two keys. I suspect the frequency of 0-2 deaths may well reduce over the coming months. Batternut (talk) 20:09, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Oh sure, cases as secondary key (it's the sorting in the source code, so any order works) but you get countries with 500 cases and 1 death (big outbreak, explosion of new cases) below countries with 5 cases and 2 deaths (because it happened to hit some older couple returning to the country). Yeah, most likely a problem that "solves" itself over time. --mfb (talk) 20:39, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Yes. If you watch the source carefully, you will notice it is often incorrect. Sun Creator(talk) 03:49, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
The total in the source is in balance with the rows. However, the table at Wikipedia does not follow the source. For instance the number of cases in Korea is way to high compared with the source. Furter, the source is made by programmers. The sum is of course a calculated figure. Why do you not take this seriously? 213.67.241.199 (talk) 04:35, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Naturally the figures changes several times a day, but strangely enough, Wikipedia has higher figures than the alleged source. I assume that some of the figures are not really from the source...

Each territory has a reference after the name, which can track down the exception. So South Korea currently has this. France has a hatnote - " Includes cases overseas in French Guiana, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin.", Spain has this and like wise the others are covered with inline references. If you are interested check https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries as most of the day it is more up to date then the JHU source. Sun Creator(talk) 04:59, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
OK The table is not 100% accurate... What I want is to keep track of each country each morning, to make curves for individual countries. I guess https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries fits my purposes better. Thanks for the link. 213.67.241.199 (talk) 05:11, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

I suggest to add an external link: there is currently lots of visualizations showing the spread of Corona by region, but that's not accessible to all users. Plots with cases and death per capita for the most affected countries

There are now very many countries affected. In most cases absolute numbers are used which neglects small countries. I adapted a Python script to be able to make plots with cases and death per capita automatically for the most affected countries: https://github.com/RainerWinkler/COVID-19-plot. I Uploaded the plots for the current top 10 countries.

Top 10 Countries Cases

Top 10 Countries Deaths

There are six more plots on above link till rank 40 currently. It is easy to see which small countries are now also affected. The plots are easy to be adapted and can be generated by all users. The data is from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. Will such a plot be helpful here? Malanoqa (talk) 20:03, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Some countries are so small that a few cases or a single death leads to a massive jump in the graph. Have a family of 3 travel to Monaco with the infection and it looks like the outbreak explodes due to these three extra cases. I don't think it is useful to include these countries, their numbers are dominated by random chance. --mfb (talk) 01:45, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Adding link for voice access to Corona data

The article is linking to multiple Web sites visualizing Corona spread data. We were thinking about how to make that same data accessible for visually impaired users as well. We have a voice interface (currently tested for Chrome browsers) running here: https://databyvoice.com/corona.html

E.g., press any key and ask "How is the situation in Europe?" or "how many cases in New York?" and it summarizes the most recent data via voice output. We're taking data from sources such as CDC or WHO and it's updated daily.

I think it might make sense to add this as external link - do we have consensus? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Itrummer (talkcontribs) 17:10, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

@Itrummer: How often does this update? I know you said daily but the reason I'm asking is for example right now the CDC says the United States has 10,442 cases but the page when asked says 7,700 cases. When I ask about West Virginia which has 5 confirmed cases [1] the voice page says there is 1 case confirmed. Alucard 16❯❯❯ chat? 06:51, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
@Alucard 16: We update daily (in the morning according to EDT) using the daily reports published by Johns Hopkins, see here [2] for the most recent one (they upload the report for the previous day at around midnight). This one reports only two cases in West Virginia for the moment. We are currently extending the data that can be accessed with the interface, we're also in contact with the ACB with regards to making the interface work together better with screen readers.
@Alucard 16: Just wanted to verify whether the answer above was sufficient? In summary, we update every day, for the moment this is the newest daily report available from Johns Hopkins: [3] Please let us know in case of further questions.

More a Wikicommons question, but thought I'd post here given the traffic. Currently using a computer without Photoshop, anyone know how to update the SVG map(s) with another resource? In principle you can update SVG files with a text editor. It can be a bit awkward, but small changes like changing a color of a country work fine if someone commented the source code. --mfb (talk) 02:33, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Cook Islands?

According the per capita map, the Cook Islands are shown as having Covid19 present. The timeline of the map indicates it was added to the map on March 19. I can find no media reports of this. And the Cook Islands are not on the table of cases/deaths. So is it there? Or not? Either the map should remove it, or the table should include it (probably under New Zealand, noted by footnote). 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic by country and territoryEpidemiology of COVID-19 – Currently there is no page for the epidemiology on COVID-19. Having a single page with this information seems to make much more sense than embedding the same images in a lot of places, and crowding up the main 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. This page isn't about international responses, so this title seems more appropriate. GeekInParadise (talk) 20:41, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose as proposed. Epidemiology of the virus itself (what can be stated about general aspects of its incidence and spread over time) is covered at Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2#Epidemiology, or it's supposed to be; if there is something generalizable that can be said there that isn't being said, let us know. Causation is covered at the virus page too. This article is about the particular pandemic so it doesn't lend itself to aspects of viral epidemiology as a whole (e.g. studies estimating R_0). Transmission and case fatality rate (aspects of the effects of the disease on humans) are covered at Coronavirus disease 2019#Epidemiology. The diagrams on the pandemic page are about this specific pandemic, not about the general epidemiology of COVID-19 or the virus. If this were a request to move to Epidemiology of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic I might support that, since it seems like you are interested in consolidating information that applies to this specific outbreak. Dekimasuよ! 05:54, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose. As per reason above. It has already a section on Coronavirus disease 2019#Epidemiology. It doesn't need to move the article name to the name you've been requested and it's already obvious. I'm opposed your move request, Sorry... Movies Time (talk) 10:33, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
  • OPPOSE: Wikipedia is useful to the layperson. "Epidemiology" is not language frequently used outside the scientific community. • Oppose: this page provides a useful summary of how the pandemic is affecting different countries and the title should reflect that. Samuel Salzman (talk) 11:52, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Even if it was factually warranted, people come to this page for the content its current title describes. This would then be missing. In such times of crisis, Wikipedia's mission to inform and educate normal people should trump the interest of an expert population wanting a possibly more technically correct medical term in the title. • Comment Let's close this per WP:SNOW to get the notice off of the article. Sdkb (talk) 03:54, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose: The page as it is has a larger scope than just the epidemiology of the disease. It provides a summary level overveiw of the pandemic as a whole in each country.  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 02:12, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
  • @GeekInParadise: This would be a good time to withdraw the move request I think. --mfb (talk) 02:30, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose: For all reasons above. I also agree with Sdkb and mfb. It's time for someone to remove this request this per WP:SNOW (which I may do later today, but would prefer it if @GeekInParadise: just removed the request) -- RobLa (talk) 18:50, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose, as mentioned by the anon, Wikipedia's primary audience is laypeople. Scientists are not going to be using this article. I've heard the word "epidemiology" many times, but I wasn't sure exactly what it meant until this discussion. We need to keep this simple, so that information remains accessible to all. -- Zanimum (talk) 19:44, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Confirmed deaths map outdated

The confirmed deaths map, despite the statement to be as of 22nd March, is several days outdated. Red represents countries with cases but no deaths. A number of countries with cases have not been added, including Cape Verde, Angola, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, Isle of Man, Haiti, East Timor. And of countries with deaths (black), Mauritius, Ghana, Paraguay, DR Congo, Lithuania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Colombia, Singapore, Finland, Chile, Israel are all marked in red, and should be black, since all have deaths recorded. And Russia is in black indicating a death, but it has none. If the map cannot be kept current, what is its purpose? Ptilinopus (talk) 10:43, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Most of these things have been fixed recently. According to the table Russia had a death which was not officially recognized. --mfb (talk) 01:37, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Only a few have been fixed. Of those I said had not been added, Cape Verde, Angola, Haiti, and East Timor are still missing; add to that countries more recently added to the table: Mozambique, Dominica, Grenada, Syria, Eritrea. Of those I mentioned above which had deaths, but are still red, nothing has changed. More recent deaths have occurred in Gambia, Zimbabwe, Gabon, Montenegro, Mauritius, Nigeria, Andorra, Costa Rica, North Macedonia. All are still red. And apart from Russia, whose current status is 0 deaths, 5 other entities on the table are coloured black, but have no deaths: Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Croatia and Slovakia. If no-one has the time or ability to keep the map current, its purpose is doubtful. Ptilinopus (talk) 14:46, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks to the editor(s) for a huge improvement! All the newly added countries are present! Almost all the countries with deaths are now in black (1 exception - Israel is still red). The area still to be updated is the countries and territories marked black for deaths, but which have none recorded: Russia, Croatia, Slovakia, and the territories remote from their mother country: Reunion, Puerto Rico, Guam, French Guiana, Mayotte. Again, thanks for the hard work. But in the interests of accuracy... Ptilinopus (talk) 00:56, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

Sourcing for Entities without confirmed cases

I am a bit concerned about the lack of sourcing of the Entities without confirmed cases section. For the countries and a few of the more populated regions I could find sources relatively easily, but many of the territories listed are quite obscure and sparsely populated. One IAR-ish way to get around is to use Worldometers as a default source, which also lists dependent territories, except it is not clear if the list is exhaustive. Another solution, which I think adheres more closely to Wikipedia policy, is to only allow entries that have reliable sources stating they are COVID-free; in this case we also need to decide how recent the source needs to be or add an "as of" column. The Norwegian region Jan Mayen is unfortunately not mentioned. Why?--2A02:8108:41C0:4CF8:A9C2:5A8B:DBC:7F58 (talk) 12:17, 29 March 2020 (UTC)   Done

Cases per capita?

Might be an interesting column in the "Pandemic by country and territory" table. What do you think? --mfb (talk) 23:27, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Perhaps adding a column for total population of the country and one showing the pro mil infected would be useful. Haider254 (talk) 12:48, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

World map with per capita count makes sense. Epoch23 (talk) 13:38, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Very much endorse! Engelhardt (talk) 05:00, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

someone might check the math on the cases per capita for the US on the color coded mapAxelhose (talk) 21:33, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Axelhose

Support! Incidence rate is normally calculated in terms of at-risk population over given period of time. So it's useful to give the context of the at-risk population if we are listing country. It's similar to GDP and GDP per capita.64.18.152.49 (talk) 15:11, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
