As for the section I added about drug usage, I would welcome any attempts to trim down the drug use section and/or make attributions for the article in general. Thanks - Mr0t1633 (talk) 20:42, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Melting copper?? I am quite skeptic that any normal torch would create flame hot enough to melt copper. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.111.210.197 (talk) 08:12, 5 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sources edit

I wouldn't even know where to begin to find sources for this kind of stuff. I'm not sure if a citable paper exists for most assertions on this stuff. Maybe a few about flame temperature exist, but all are paywalled that I could find. Maybe patent filings could mention smoking, or not. Really, I feel that common sense combined with using wikilinks (possibly as actual sources). Or maybe I suck at researching, but all the google stuff I sifted through was ultimately linked to forum postings and such. So, I apologize for the volume of uncited statements, but if it's gonna be mentioned that we use torch lighters for creme brulees, then it'd be incomplete to not also mention its applications in smoking hard drugs - for people who smoke their primary drug, torch lighter can be a necessity. For some hashish, anyway, a regular Bic lighter, or even several, can't do more than melt the shit (by that type of method, at least)Mr0t1633 (talk) 20:42, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here is a patent application for something at least similar to a torch lighter. Cant tell from schematics and stuff and don't know WP policy on linking patents.
And one that was the first result for 'temperature torch lighter' was this paywalled paper. Again, can't really tell what it is. Better to just post it here than to cite a source that may not prove your point, and thus risk having only the illusion of citation.
It should at least be easier than I thought a while ago to establish the usages of torch lighters in smoking. I'll amend main article to mention cigars as there was a patent for a torch lighter for cigars. I'll cite that one, though, as it's unambiguous. Mr0t1633 (talk) 20:53, 19 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
A patent is not generally considered a reliable source (see WP:SPS). Anyway, the info doesn't pertain to the claims that are most likely to be challenged. If you're not sure what constitutes verifiability or reliable sources, there's lots of help for you on Wikipedia. Also, if you're really concerned about the completeness of the article, I would point out that lots of applications for butane torches are not covered: soldering, cutting polyfoam, etc. Richigi (talk) 21:16, 24 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Drug usage section greatly reduced edit

I excised the majority of the drug usage section (three paragraphs), replacing it with two sourced sentences. Most of what was cut was overly explanatory (this article is about butane torches, not freebasing) and was unreferenced except for a link to a patent that was really beside the point. I could find no reliable sources to cite for hashish and heroin--I expect the process is the same, but since the sources that I found don't mention these substances, I felt it was best to omit them.

Small butane "torches" are also used to light cigars, but I contend that this information belongs in the lighter article, or maybe the cigar article. Richigi (talk) 22:49, 24 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

What is the torch tip made out of, the material? 2601:603:5401:5270:E074:54DA:367D:6696 (talk) 18:49, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
