File:Blickling Gardens Map.JPG Nominated for speedy Deletion

edit
An image used in this article, File:Blickling Gardens Map.JPG, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Other speedy deletions
What should I do?
Speedy deletions at commons tend to take longer than they do on Wikipedia, so there is no rush to respond. If you feel the deletion can be contested then please do so (commons:COM:SPEEDY has further information). Otherwise consider finding a replacement image before deletion occurs.

National Trust pilot

edit

Hello! During late June, July and some of August, I'm working on a paid project sponsored by the National Trust to review and enhance coverage of NT sites. You can find the pilot edits here, as well as a statement and contact details for the National Trust. I am leaving this message when I make a first edit to a page; please do get in touch if you have any concerns. Lajmmoore (talk) 14:53, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

What about the ghost?

edit

I looked up this page to refresh my memory about a ghostly tale associated with Blickling Hall, but there isn't a word about it here. I'm not suggesting it really is haunted, but I seem to remember this being one of the most famous and long-established ghost stories of the traditional English type. I think a phantom coach driven by a headless horseman is supposed to bring Anne Boleyn back home on the anniversary of her death, though I forget whether she herself has a head. Probably not.

I was right. I googled a few other websites and apparently she turns up in a coach driven by a headless man and drawn by four headless horses with her head in her lap. And there seem to be at least four other ghosts too, most of them headless (it must be catching). There are actually six ghosts, if you count Anne Boleyne outside the house once a year without a head and Anne Boleyne inside the house with a head all year round as separate apparitions. It's a load of nonsense of course, but rather entertaining nonsense, and it appears to be a long-standing tradition. Don't you think it deserves at least a few words? 86.144.29.86 (talk) 04:08, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

No. Wikipedia’s an encyclopaedia, not a site for “entertaining nonsense”. What the article does need is coverage of the architecture of the house. How about you focus on that instead? KJP1 (talk) 05:04, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
... personally I think this article is probably haunted. A "phantom coach driven by a headless horseman"?? Sounds a bit like Wikipedia! Martinevans123 (talk) 15:01, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Now, just stop it. If you carry on, we'll have Dr Blofeld round adding his spooks and spectres. If you're looking for something to do, there's a bunch of Grade I listed churches in North Wales that need articles! KJP1 (talk) 15:20, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
As you will know, I never do any stuff north of Tonypandy. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:23, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

New Image

edit

Good afternoon all, I have recently made 2 separate uploads for a new image for blickling hall. This is all very new to me, so I am unsure how you normally do things.

I believe it was removed due to the scale loosing proportions. Could I please have some opinions? Cooper Captures (talk) 14:31, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cooper Captures - Thanks very much for starting a discussion. That's exactly how we do things here, so you're learning fast! Personally I prefer the original image - for me your first was too close and this one is too distant, although I appreciate I'm sounding like Goldilocks. But let's see what others say. Happy to go with consensus, of course. KJP1 (talk) 14:37, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is there any way of showing both images in this thread? So we are able to give people a view of both images. I am happy for everyone to share their opinions but I would like to see what others say. Cooper Captures (talk) 14:38, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sure there is - give me a second. KJP1 (talk) 14:40, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't know why the images aren't of equal size? Sorry about that. KJP1 (talk) 14:47, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Believe C was taken in portrait which is why proportions have changed. Cooper Captures (talk) 14:49, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Errm... you do realise that here are no fewer than 493 images of Blickling Hall already at Commons? I'm a little surprised that we need any more! Martinevans123 (talk) 14:48, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
As previously stated, this is all new to me. I wasn't aware of this. I am just trying to provide content to share with others. Cooper Captures (talk) 14:50, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Martin - Don't bite the newcomers! It is a beautiful building of which we can never have too many images. It would be nice if we had a bit more text on the architecture but.... KJP1 (talk) 14:52, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure Cooper Captures' contributions are very welcome. To be quite frank, it would probably be a quicker process to choose between these three images here than to actually compare all of the existing candidates against each other. Just sayin'. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:55, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
This discussion was started to help KJP1 and others decide which image makes the cut. I am not sure when the image was last changed, I would say it's nice to refresh things every now and again. Cooper Captures (talk) 14:58, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I quite agree it's good to refresh things. Especially if higher quality images are involved. I'm sure yours are great. But the front elevation of this property hasn't changed in over 400 years? And, as I said, there really are an awful lot of very similar looking images already uploaded at the Blicking Hall Commons page. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:05, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin,
Thanks for your response. Both images I uploaded are far higher quality to what is there currently. I have a few images of there from different angles. These were just a quick upload, hoping I would get a discussion going. The image is 24MP and is as clear as I can get. Cooper Captures (talk) 15:09, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is a nifty tool on Commons an editor once showed me. If you go to Category, you see a Good Pictures icon in the RH corner. Click on it, and you get all the images in the Category that have been assessed as Good. Unfortunately, like ReFill, it appears to work only intermittently. KJP1 (talk) 15:13, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that sounds ideal. I suspect that many of the existing Commons images may be poor quality. But without actually going to check all possible candidates, we just won't know. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:17, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are 3 images in question and they are above. I feel as though this has been more hassle than it’s worth. I am happy to remove the images to avoid this whole situation. Cooper Captures (talk) 15:18, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think your images deserve a fair appraisal. Happy to keep this thread open. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:25, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
As the lead image to illustrate an encyclopaedic article about Blickling Hall, I prefer the composition in image A. Disclosure: that is an image I took with my phone in 2014. -- DeFacto (talk). 20:12, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
That makes 3 for A. Please change it back and allow me to remove my images Cooper Captures (talk) 20:20, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've restored the earlier image. You'll need to request the deletion of your files by following the instructions here, Commons:Deletion requests. I know it can take a little while to understand how Wikipedia goes about things - the rules can be complicated for those new to the site. Nevertheless, I hope your first experience hasn't been too daunting, and that you stick around. KJP1 (talk) 07:44, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have filed a deletion request. Once that goes through I will remove my account as I don’t think this is the place for me. 37.60.83.18 (talk) 07:50, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

here
Does that "nifty tool" work for you? How did you decide? Yes, that one looks good. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:18, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Didn't use it; just traditional wiki-graft. There must still be about 100 images needing moving to sub-cats... Johnbod (talk) 21:56, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, like "Old bits of Blickling Hall", "Chimneys at Blickling Hall", "Bits of masonry photographed at funny angles at Blickling Hall", etc., etc.? Martinevans123 (talk) 22:23, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
