Photograph edit

Here is a picture I found through google: http://www.hindisong.com/MusicHappening/MusicHappening.asp?ContentID=850 http://www.abhivyakti-hindi.org/snibandh/sakshatkar/bismillah_khan.htm

Both pages claim it to be Copyrighted (see below the pages). My guess is that they are referring to the text. Can we use the picture then?--Anupamsr 16:54, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

No. That is not a good idea. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 16:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, I have got the permission to use this image here: [1] from [2] from the website manager. I am in the process of asking for the license of the image. After that I will upload the image.--Anupamsr 11:35, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
That is good. Do have a look at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission, especially the when permission is confirmed section of the page. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 11:40, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Here is the reply I got, don't know if it is a set back or not...
Dear Anupam,

Below is the note from our editor:

"We do not hold the copyright for that image. We simply use these in
our articles under the "fair use" guidelines. Our articles are meant
to educate and we make them available free to all. Furthermore, in
the instance of pictures of Indian musicians, the original
photographers name is seldom recorded, even in books where they are
reproduced."

You can make your decision accordingly.

Best,

Anita

So? What should we do? :-) PS: Please forgive my poor english.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Anupamsr (talkcontribs)

Unfortunately, this means we cannot use the image. We have to presume that it is copyrighted but in order to use a copyrighted image on the Wikipedia, we need to identify the copyright holder and justify the fair-use. As we cannot identify the copyright holder here, we have no choice but to refrain from using the image. Sorry. Copyrighted images are a real pain. --Yamla 13:47, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Ustad is dead edit

I felt very sad by seeing the news. I had just put the current INCOTW tag on the main page and then saw the news. We owe it to the maestro. Please make this article a GA if not FA. I will chip in on Saturday and Sunday. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 07:35, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I have started some work and whipped the article into a basic form (See my Tasks section on this page). Any help/ criticism would be helpful -- Mayuresh 09:20, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Copy of text book edit

Most of the article still looks like from the copy of text book. See http://www.ncert.nic.in/textbooks/IX/step_to_eng_TextBook/Chapter%2013.pdf Chirag 21:39, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this text (ermm .. PDF). It has some good stuff on the Shehnai as well. As for this article being a copy of the PDF, i would like to take it as a compliment. Given the fact that i am seeing this PDF for the first time and i was one of the people who helped cleanup the article. I find it quite flaterring that we were able to do a decent job :) -- Mayuresh 07:48, 21 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shehnai in Swades edit

Here are the links which support my earlier edits that the Ustad played Shehnai for the song "Ye Jo Des Hai Tera" of Swades:

http://www.webindia123.com/personal/music/bismil.htm
http://www.hinduonnet.com/fline/fl2317/stories/20060908002902800.htm
http://www.dimdima.com/news_room/show_archives.asp?q_aid=18&q_title=Bismillah%20Khan%20_end%20of%20an%20era

Many blogs also claim the same. But at the same time, many other sites (e.g. smashits) claim that some B. Madhu has played Shehnai. Can someone find whether Ustad actually played Shenai for this song? --APandey 18:47, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, its a tricky situation! The official website of Swades doesn't make a mention of him. If he really had played the shehnai for a song in Swades, they'd have marketed this fact or at least mentioned in the website. This is the page from the official site which has got names of the complete crew : http://www.swades.com/completecrew.html. Go to the MUSIC CREDITS section, the credit for the shehnai for the song is given to Madhu. Jay 05:22, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in Bismillah Khan edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Bismillah Khan's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "IT":

  • From Abdul Ghaffar Khan: "Everything in Afghanistan is done in the name of religion: Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan". India Today. Archived from the original on 22 December 2019. Retrieved 13 January 2014.
  • From Pranab Mukherjee: "The Man Indira Trusted". India Today. 16 October 2010. Archived from the original on 31 August 2020. Retrieved 9 August 2012.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. Feel free to remove this comment after fixing the refs. AnomieBOT 14:14, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
