Popes given authority as successors of Peter
editThe Article states "This serves as the scriptural and traditional foundation for the Catholic Church's conception of papal authority, stemming from such an investiture of St. Peter, since the Popes are the Successors of St. Peter." However, This supposed fact is disputed by Protestant denominations. In particular, the "rock" on which Jesus built His Church in Matthew 16:18, is not believed to be Peter (who in the same verse He calls a mere stone), but instead is believed to be Peter's statement in Matthew 16:16 (two verses earlier), that Christ is "the Son of the living God". Since this is a disputed point, I have added the phrase "according to Roman Catholic doctrine" after "since" and before "the Popes are the successors". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tacticus (talk • contribs) 03:22, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
