Posthumously? Doesn't make sense.

edit

How could she have been "awarded" the medal posthumously if she passed away after she was awarded it. "Posthumously" means she would have passed away before it was awarded. Being 'made' and being 'awarded' is the same thing; so if she was 'made' a member of the Order of Canada in 2001 (ie, before she passed away in 2002) then she was, de facto, 'awarded' the honour. That means that she was a Member of Order of Canada in 2001, before she had passed away.

Perhaps what really should be written here is something like:

"...In 2001, it was decided that she be made a Member of the Order of Canada..." This uses the subjective verb tense ("to be") and would be a more apt way to express it, because it was the decision that occured in 2001, not the award. In my opinion.

It makes it clear that she was not actually 'made' a member of the Order in 2001, while she was still alive (which, I assume, was the case). And in that case it would be clearer that the actual 'award', when it was officially granted, was posthumous.

It would then be more logical to understand that she was informed of the decision to proceed with granting the award (ie, in the future), shortly before her death. But she didn't actually receive the award in 2001. And that's important to know. --Atikokan (talk) 20:26, 12 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
