Someone versed in Japanese might want to answer this question of mine: What word does Bankei use, that is translated as 'unborn'? Could it be translated as 'birthless' as well?

It means total clarity of mind by not clinging to any external stimuli. Once the mind is cleared of formal thought processes and silence is found in the mind, it is still past that. The brain to some even tries to cling to external sounds in meditation, such as a ringing in ones ear. Once past that and seeing no formal identifications of ones self, then one witnesses no-mind. Basically if your brain was a smart phone you clear all the browser tabs and close all the running programs, but you leave the phone on, but with your brain.
