Death? edit

Wiki's "Reliable sources" requirement would include Ari's Stepfather's page. Her death date is sourced via several "friends" pages, but John Lydon's page is as legitimate as they would come. Dirtypants (talk) 02:28, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Accent? edit

Her accent is described here as 'German' but when she appeared on the Australian TV program Spicks and Specks on 14 March 2007 her accent sounded distinctly Jamaican. Elitism 06:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would guess that Ari has spent 75% or so of the last 21 years in Jamaica, so it's no wonder. She also has distinct west-London twang, which has been more noticeable of late as she tours with the UK girls, possibly not that noticeable to an Australian, perhaps. But she certainly still retains plenty of the German. It's the basis of her accent. I don't think the description needs changing. Wwwhatsup 21:47, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is perfectly clear. Ari speaks with a German / Jamaican / West London sort of accent !! Fairly distinctive, then.

Appearance on Spicks & Specks edit

As mentioned above, Ari Up appeared on Spicks and Specks (earlier this year I think). I remember she was really disruptive and crazy during the show. Should this be mentioned in the article? Raph89 06:08, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, disruptive and crazy is par for Ari. If it made the newspapers and you can cite something, or there is a clip online, then perhaps. Wwwhatsup 08:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Real name / birth date edit

Is it Arianna, Ariana or Ariane, Forster? The present article quotes two or these variants; plus is it the 1 January or 17 January 1962? Wikipedia stands or falls by getting these sort of facts correct (as far as is possible). Anyone got her birth certificate (ha ha)?

Derek R Bullamore (talk) 00:35, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's definitely Ariane Forster. Arianna or Ariana don't exist in German. Plus she dinstinctly sings "My name is Ariane" (Ariane with a long 2nd 'a' spoken in clearly German pronunciation) on 'Reggae Gypsy' on the new album. Trust me, I'm German. Thank you - article now consistently amended accordingly.

Where did the "Daniele" come from? The usual "German" version of the name would be "Daniela", Daniele being French or sth. --88.75.149.189 (talk) 13:14, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

This was the spelling in The Independent obit (current ref #1) and now The Telegraph obit. Also, Ariane was also the first name spelling in these obits therefore seems reliable. The confusion of spellings is likely due to differences in German and English pronunciation e.g. "Ariane" in German would sound like "Arianna" in English, whereas the spelling of "Ariane" in English might tend to be pronounced without the 4th syllable (like "Arianne"). Dl2000 (talk) 03:05, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I found it here in Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/culture-obituaries/music-obituaries/8081556/Ari-Up.html I would still not be sure what sources the used and how thoroughly they researched. They could have just used Wikipedia. The spelling of her second name is untypical in German and I also doubt that a Munic newspaper publisher is associated with Der Spiegel, as it is distincltly north German and it is more likely to be Sueddeutscher Verlag or Sueddeutsche Zeitung (see below). I'm German, by the way, and a journalist. --88.75.149.189 (talk) 17:38, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Note the middle name was introduced to the article based on the publishing of The Independent obit (see [1]). Unless that was added to a much earlier edit, the UK papers probably didn't source the middle name from Wikipedia. A Google of "Ariane Daniela Forster" yields only three sites, all from blockshopper.com involving California real estate e.g. [2]. That finding was interesting, but the UK papers are probably the best sources to use per WP:RS. Dl2000 (talk) 00:03, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, that is not surprising as her parents live there so it probably comes from sources close to her family. But then even John Lydon (or his people) misspelled her first name when they anounced her death on his site as "Arianna". --88.75.149.189 (talk) 22:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Grandfather newspaper proprietor "Der Spiegel"? edit

I would doubt very much that a Munich newspaper proprietor is connected to Der Spiegel as it is very much a paper connected with Hamburg (and Hanover) in the north of Germany (whereas Munich is in the south). Ari's German had a destinct southern accent. Maybe someone can find out who he was? I couldn't find out anything online, apart from most likely copied hints saying "Der Spiegel". --88.75.149.189 (talk) 21:20, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I found out that Aris mother's maiden name was apparently "Maier" which might help finding the omnious newspaper proprietor http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/story/lydon-accused-of-being-insanely-jealous --88.75.149.189 (talk) 22:14, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

At the relevant time the owners of Der spiegel were Rudolf Augstein (who was also editor in chief) and John Jahr and she is defenitely not their granddaughter - they both have no daughter called Nora born in 1941 and only Jahr has older sons (who were apparently not married to someone called Nora). --88.75.149.189 (talk) 00:17, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

her grandfather was franz karl maier, who was publisher of "der tagesspiegel". see: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Karl_Maier https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Der_Tagesspiegel 80.110.103.6 (talk) 19:09, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Copy editing edit

I note the copyedit tag here, and thought I'd have a go a polishing things up a bit in the next few days, as well as arranging some of the text in the more logical order as its a bit untidy. --gilgongo (talk) 10:25, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Husband? edit

The page fleetingly mentions a "husband and two children" but not who he was or whether they stayed together. Can anyone fill in on this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bozodetector (talkcontribs) 20:36, 13 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Later life edit

This diff removed this section, since it had been citation tagged for years. Since the info is, to my knowledge, good. I put it here in the hope it will in the future be sourced.

In 2006, Ari reformed The Slits with original bass player Tessa Pollitt. They released an EP and later toured Europe, North America, Australia, and Japan. She occasionally played solo concerts in New York, and toured the UK with her backing band The True Warriors. She also recorded with the Jammyland All Stars, Brave New Girl, Dubistry, and the German techno-dancehall outfit, Terranova.

Nina Hagen edit

Trivia: Singer Nina Hagen stated that her Song "Am Bahnhof Zoo" from her 1. LP was about Ariane. Quote: "I've got a girl-friend, she's 15 and singer with a band named the Slits. And I've got a crush on her." First 35 secs here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G21HMGW08k 92.225.170.220 (talk) 22:37, 16 September 2018 (UTC)DaggerReply
