editAlun Lewis died in Burma and was buried at Bawli North Military cemetery, this according to his biographer John Pikoulis. He and his fellow soldiers had boarded a ship at Chittagong and from there made their way up river to Cox's Bazar and then to Bawli Bazar, where Lewis stayed until March 4th when he joined B Company in the Coppe area.
Although a court inquiry did conclude that Alun Lewis's death on March 5th was the result of an accidental gunshot wound in a fall, the evidence strongly suggests that Lewis committed suicide. The army claimed that Lewis's gun was found by his side when, in fact, it was found in his hand. He had been shot in the temple. A doctor of forensic science who reviewed the evidence concluded that "the statistical changes of a single shot from a dropped revolver hitting someone in the temple are very remote indeed and that deliberate self-infliction is far more likely." Lewis's fellows soldiers assumed he had shot himself as did others who knew of Lewis's history of serious depression. The notion of his death being accidental sounds more like military whitewash than reality. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OwenBrooke (talk • contribs) 15:45, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
The End
edit"He died in Burma, in the course of the Second World War campaign against the Japanese..."
However, I have read that he died near Chittagong (Bangladesh today). Llywelyn2000 (talk) 22:29, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
