Rejection by the Academy
edit"...satirizes the jury of the French Academy of Painting, which had rejected several of his earlier works on account of their divergence from any known standard."
Orlando Figes in his book "The Europeans" writes that Decamps was "rejected all his life by the Academy" -- a somewhat stronger statement than what appears here in the WP article. 2001:16B8:4603:5B00:90E4:E9F4:6275:FD90 (talk) 19:45, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
