Talk:Ahuitzotl

Untitled edit

Neither Moctezuma nor Cuitláhuac were his sons, that would make them brothers to Cuauhtémoc. Axacáyatl appears in some of the hyperlinked pages as a separate ruler, preceding Tízoc. So where does the confusion arise?

I'm taking that reference out for now.

Survey - in support of the move edit

  1. support (conditional), unless Maunus or another of our resident Nahuatl experts can identify a principle or consistency in using the form without /h/. We should certainly omit the accented í in either case (spanish orthog). Wimmer's Dictionnaire de la langue nahuatl classique uses AHUITZOTL (āhuitzotl with the full diacritical markup).--cjllw | TALK 00:53, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  2. Support - I have been wanting to sugest the move myself but haven't gotten around - rthe h spelling is certainly more common.·Maunus· ·ƛ· 07:40, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
  3. Support If its appropriate, then go for it -- Oaxaca dan 00:04, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Translation of Name edit

The Spanish source glosses the name as "el espinoso del agua" which is not "Thorny Water" but "the thorny one of the water". Nahuatl compounds, like English compounds, are usually head-final and huitzotl "thorny one, porcupine" (< huitztli "thorn") is the second element of Ahuitzotl, not ātl "water". Āhuitzotl was also the Classical Nahuatl word for "otter". Linguoboy (talk) 15:38, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
