Arable farming

@Cwmhiraeth: Is it possible you could find a bit more on arable farming? Also what about the European Union influence on agriculture, and diversification? Diversification from farmers is quite important in Wales, many farms in the summer earnmost of their money from strawberry and rasberry picking and paintballing etc! Also something about the nature of markets in Wales, how produce is sold etc. I believe a lot of farmers have deals now with supermarkets with milk etc.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:18, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: Indeed, I am open to new ideas and am still working on the article. I will try to add more on arable. The crop of the moment round where I live is wind turbines. Yes diversification should be brief. Yes, wind farms, very much so, I can see a lot of the ones in the valleys across the vale from where I live! I think this could use a little more detail on farming methods, the crops/sheep farming and the market for GA. A bit more detail on the EU influence too I think. Are there any figures on milk production and wool production in Wales as a direct result of farming? I know Aymatth just created an article on the Woollen industry in Wales. Pesticides and cultivation etc too. I'll see how it comes on when you've expanded it and take another look at it then.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:31, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Initial comments

• "and tourism has become an important form of income in the countryside" - would it be worth linking Tourism in Wales in here?
• "Arable crops and horticulture are limited to southeastern Wales" - link horticulture
• "the Welsh Marches, the northeastern part of the country" - link Welsh Marches (as it is already linked in the body)
• "Eighty percent of the country is classified as being in a "less favoured area"" - "Less Favoured Area" is capitalised in the overview in the section but not in the lead nor the image caption. Needs consistency
• "This consists of the Vale of Glamorgan, Monmouthshire, the Welsh Marches, Flint and Denbighshire" - surely Flintshire? It's linked to flint, the stone!
• "The mild Atlantic climate with predominantly westerly winds give the country a high rainfall that reaches 80 in (203 cm) or more in the uplands" - needs clarification, is this a specific area of uplands or is it just higher ground in general?
• "In 1801, the population of Wales was 0.587 million" - would it be better read as 587,000?
• "half of whom lived in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire" - link Glamorgan (the historic county)
• "Much of the land was in the hands of large landowners" - sounds a tad unencyclopaedic. How about something like was in the possession of large landowners or was largely in the possession of landowners
• "There were 945 arable and horticultural holdings" - might sound better as There were also 945 arable and horticultural holdings, so the reader still knows that this is as of 2014
• "and herded on foot to be fattened in England for selling at English markets" - in English markets
• "On the Welsh farm they were used to pull ploughs" - just one Welsh farm?
• I strongly recommend cutting down one image as it messes up with the format of the article
• No dead links
• No dab links

This article is very well written. I'll leave this on hold until all of the above are clarified, or if you plan to expand it a little (from what I saw on the talk page), I'll be happy to wait longer. JAGUAR  15:05, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

I believe Cwm intends to add a fair bit more on this before it passes GA. To give the bonus 150 points on top of the 100 for passing it will need to be broader researched than currently. I would expect at least double the sources and a fairly sound summary of the different types of agricultural practices in Wales by section first (with summaries and main|Sheep farming in Wales etc linked, though the article is already taking shape nicely and she's made a fine start!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:28, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks Jaguar. I nominated it for GAN because I thought it might take some time before anyone took up the review, but you were so quick! I have dealt with the points you raised above, but if you can wait a couple of days before finishing the review, that will give me time to add a bit more along the lines Dr Blofell has suggested. Yes, it's now at the minimum standard for what I'd expected on such an article and now has most of things I'd expected to see. It could still be markedly improved with more depth on agrarian history and examples of farming practices across Wales and changes over time, but it is now deserving of the points. Structure of the article?

I recently split Agriculture in Turkey out from the economy article and am wondering what the structure should be. So I thought I might copy a good "Agriculture in country X". But the structure here looks a bit odd don't you think - if anyone improves it please ping me or indeed edit Agriculture in Turkey directly to a better structure. Fish farms in scope?

I assume fish farming is part of agriculture but they are not mentioned Chidgk1 (talk) 19:12, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Perhaps you should expand Fishing industry in Wales to Fish industry in Wales and add links directing readers between Agriculture and Fish page? Titus Gold (talk) 22:46, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

I am not planning to edit anything about Wales. I asked because this is the only "Agriculture in country X" good article so I hoped to use it as a model for bringing Agriculture in Turkey up to good. Thanks for mentioning the other article I did not know about. So I assume you are saying that fish farms belong in "Fishing industry in X" not "Agriculture in X".
