Roode Eyelandt etymology
editI'm trying to determine the etymology of "Rhode Island" for the Aquidneck Island article. I've seen two claims made, one of which (the one I'm less inclined to believe) is also claimed on this article's page:
1. Verrazzano noted in correspondence that there was an island in Narragansett Bay similar to the Greek island of Rhodes. The pilgrims, having known of this story, decided that Aquidneck was the island and named it as such.
Evidence: http://sos.ri.gov/library/history/name/ cites actual correspondence and documents, though I haven't tried to actually verify these citations. There is a logical leap between Verrazzano's reference to Rhodes and Aquidneck's eventual renaming by pilgrims. In the absence of better evidence, it sounds like a logical conclusion that Verrazzano was the originator of the idea.
2. Adriaen Block, the Dutch explorer, named something (a particular island? the whole RI state area?) "Roodt Eylandt" because of the red clay lining the shores.
Evidence: Many websites make this claim (including the Rhode Island state webpage!), but do not supply any backup evidence. Is there any documentation/correspondence to support this claim?

UPDATE: After doing a little more digging (evidence presented at Talk:Aquidneck Island#Research into Name), I've come to the conclusion that the "Roodt Eylandt" story has little to substantiate it. If anyone is aware of anything that give further support to the "Roodt Eylandt" story, please let me know. --Rsl12 (talk) 21:47, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
And after even more digging, I've come to the conclusion that the "Roodt Eylandt" story has just as much to substantiate it as the other possibility. See Talk:Aquidneck Island for my research. --Rsl12 (talk) 17:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
I think that something else could be added to this. Its kind of short. Nadagoose28 (talk) 18:50, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
