Anja Cleo?

You're mixing two scales together. The name given to the storm (i.e. Intense Tropical Cyclone) is according to Meteo-France which reports their own wind speeds in 10-minute standards. This tends to differ from the JTWC intensity which we correspond to the SSHS. Although Anja was a Cat:3 at one point, Meteo-France assessed it to have been a high-end Tropical cyclone, with 10-min winds of 100mph. The threshold for an Intense Tropical Cyclone is 105mph to 130mph. When Cleo was upped to an Intense Tropical Cyclone, the wind speed reported by the JTWC was not as high as the conversion from 10-min to 1-min winds should be. There is a point when it is declared a "ITC" - When RSMC La Reunion (Meteo France) say that 10-min winds=90kts.Jason Rees (talk) 01:57, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

The JTWC does the 1-min winds of the SSHS. RSMC La Reunion uses the scale with the Intense tropical cyclone. They are completly unrelated! Hope this helps. --Priyanka 02:50, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Edzani Classification

"Early January 7, RSMC La Reunion upgraded Edzani to a Tropical Cyclone skipping Severe Tropical Storm." Are you sure? I kida saw the advisroy that said Severe Tropical Storm Edzani was at 55 kt winds. If I am not mistaken, that is a Severe Tropical Storm. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 14:46, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Here is the RSMC La Reunion best track for Edzani: [2]. Edzani was a Severe Tropical Storm (Forte Tempête Tropicale) at 0000 UTC January 7 and it was further upgraded to a tropical cyclone six hours later. -Ramisses (talk) 15:31, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I think they use both, but why they used depression as opposed to disturbance i dont know. i didnt find anything from a look through the TCOP but looking through the advisories Reunion specifically state that it should be called a Subtropical storm.Jason Rees (talk) 01:35, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Dépression subtropicale 16 has also been translated as Subtropical Depression on the English technical bulletin. Maybe the RSMC have recently started to discern a difference between Subtropical Disturbances and Depressions.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 09:48, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

And why it was named Joel while still classified as a depression? This naming is at least as odd as the system itself is. Did you have a look in the latest advisory (some parts snipped)

It was named because it had surpassed winds of 35kts which is the general naming level for subtropical and tropical cyclones in this basin. The thing i find odd are the classifications with it being called a Depression as opposed to a subtropical storm as what happened with SS 10.Jason Rees (talk) 22:22, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't think 10 was actually designated subtropical storm by RSMC. This is what was officially said (advisory 12):

GIVENT THIS HYBRID CHARACTERISTICS (BAROCLINIC UPPER LEVEL ENHENCEMENT + TROPICAL WARM CORE), SYSTEM IS MAINTAINED AS A SUBTROPICAL DEPRESSION BUT SHOULD BE CALLED A SUBTROPICAL STORM ....

Edzani

Cyclone Edzani was one of the most powerful cyclones in the South-West Indian Ocean basin ever, tied with Adeline-Juliet in 2004 and a few others (none and even the 2nd most intense don't have their own articles) for 3rd most intense cyclone in the South-West Indian Ocean, just behind Gafilo in 2003. So does that mean it merits its own article? 112.203.184.112 (talk)
