Early lifeEdit

Rohatgi was born in Hyderabad and earned a degree in computer engineering.[3] She has said that her grandparents "lost everything" in the partition of India, which she describes as an act of terrorism.[6]

Rohatgi started her career by being part of the Femina Miss India pageant in the year with Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza.[citation needed] She later went on to represent India as Miss India Tourism in Miss Tourism World pageant internationally.[7][dead link][better source needed] There Rohatgi won the title of Supermodel Miss Tourism World.[8][9][dead link][better source needed]

Soon,[when?] Rohatgi started modelling for popular brands like Amul, Nirma, Nescafe, Dabur Hair Oil, Jaguar Bath Panel.[citation needed] She gained attention after appearing in a television ad for Cadbury's Temptations Chocolates. Around this time she also appeared in music videos by rock band, Silk Route and Indipop artist, KK.[10][better source needed]

In 2002, she did her debut with Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?, and in 2006, she appeared in 36 China Town.[11]

In 2006, she was offered an item song in the Madhur Bhandarkar film Corporate. She trained in Kathak dance[when?] under Pandit ViruKrishna.[citation needed]

In 2008, she made a cameo appearance in Ugly Aur Pagli, which was released in August. In mid-September, she appeared opposite Irrfan Khan in Dil Kabaddi.[12]

In 2010, Payal Rohatgi made her theatre debut with director and producer Vandana Sajnani's play called Fourplay.[13]

In 2012, the Rohatgi claimed sexual harassment by director Dibakar Banerjee[14][15] and Anurag Kashyap.[16]

September 2013 saw Rohatgi in Life OK's TV fiction show Hum Ne Li Hai Shapath where she played the supervillain Gong in a special episode of the comic series.[17]

In 2014, Rohatgi was part of the National Anthem shot by director Rajeev Walia.[18][19] In September 2014, Rohatgi made her television debut on the Sony TV show Humsafars.[20]

In April 2015, Ms. Rohatgi with her fiancé wrestler Sangram Singh were seen in the dance reality show Nach Baliye 7, on Star Plus. They lasted in the show till the 7th final episode.[21][22][23]

Apart from being an actor, Rohatgi has "walked the ramp" as a show stopper for various designers like Nitya Bajaj Birla, Sanjana Jon, and Archana Kochar.[citation needed]

In March 2019, Rohatgi said that the Kashmiri Muslims should be evicted from Kashmir if Article 370 cannot be removed.[24][25]

In May 2019, she suggested that names of places having Islamic references, like Khan market in New Delhi, should be changed.[26][27]

Rohatgi also attacked the 19th century Indian social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy as a traitor & lackey of British, and accused him of defaming the tradition of Sati.[28][29][30] Sati is an obsolete funeral custom where a widow immolates herself on her husband's pyre.

In June 2019, Rohatgi claimed that maratha ruler Shivaji was born in shudra varna and later moved up in caste hierarchy.[31][32] After much uproar from local political parties,[33] she issued a video apology over twitter[34][35][36] and said that she had no intention to divide the larger Hindu society of India, but she'll fight for the lost respect of Hindus by liberals, Mughal invaders, feminists, & Britishers.[37]

Mumbai police blocked Rohatgi on Twitter in 2019 but they rectified their action when she resented it and informed the Chief Minister's wife, who voiced support for her.[38][39]

Personal lifeEdit

Rohatgi is in a relationship with Indian wrestler Sangram Singh since 2011, whom she met on the sets of reality show Survivor India.[40][41] On 27 February 2014, she got engaged to wrestler Sangram Singh in Ahmedabad.[42]

They were the brand ambassadors of International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO), an Indian NGO from New Delhi,[43] and are a part of their new campaign Aware India for Health and Education.[44][better source needed]
